Can anyone recommend a good brand of blank DVD's suitable for storing pictures on,so we can make more room on our computer. I have heard about some 'Gold' archival ones, that were meant to last longer than the regular ones we buy, but I had a hard time trying to locate some in the shops today. They are a better quality, I really don't want to buy el cheapos.
We could use the CD's but they don't have much space.
Any suggestions? Thanks! |

e-film makes some of these higher end DVDs you are talking about... my local camera shop carries them. They have some sort of 300 year rating.

Just as a side note here...
I don't think it's critical to be able to store a DVD for 100 years :) The DVD, as we know it today, will be obsolete in less than 10 years most likely. We will have to periodically re-archive our photo libraries on an updated technology every 10 years or so most likely. I buy the standard DVDs and I store them in protective wallets. I don't handle them very often after I have put them away. I need them to last just long enough to carry me through until the new technology arrives...

We've just upgraded from a CD-RW to a DVD-RW Double layer drive (ASUS 1608P) as this is the new technology.
A standard DVD-RW disc holds 4.75GB of data but the double layer ones hold about 8.25GB. The double layer media however is currently too expensive at $9.95 per single disc. They're not being marketed in bulk by the likes of Imation yet but I expect they will be soon. When we can get them in 10s, 25s and 100s for about $3ea we'll be into that in a big way.

Hubby has just updated his computer and now has the double layer drive. He bought a pack of three of those double layer dvd blank disks for $20.
That is pretty much what he said, new technology will come out and we just need to keep backing up, making repeat copies down the road.
I'll keep an eye out for those e-film ones. I know I saw some somewhere, maybe it was a magazine. |

I bought a 5 pack of RiData DVD-R DL disc a few months back but when I got them I realized I needed DVD+R DL discs. I procrastinated (I am a ginat sloth after all) and didn't get them returned. I can't see throwing them away because they are perfectly good discs, I just have no use for them and I don't know anyone who does.
So if anyone needs a 5 pack of DVD-R DL discs just let me know and I'll send 'em to ya for the cost of shipping.

Just buy regular good quality DVDs. You won't need to store them for hundreds of years anyways :-)
Another (more expensive) but better option is to get a external HDD, or a high capacity USB drive, something like 120 GB. That can certainly store a lot of images, more than 3000 30 MB images. And that will likely work with any future upgrades in machines and technology.
Edit : Not to mention it can be used again and again, and again, and then some more ;-)
