I would like to think I am improving, but I have a hunch the voters are being more generous - what do you think based on your last 4 or 5 entries - are the voters more generous?
My two current entries (Best of 2005 and Road) are currently my third highest score and slightly above my average (respectively). My average seems way up as of late, and my 2 highest ever scores are in the last month - well 3 if best of hangs in there.
So what do you think? Is the average overall for challenges changing?

Hard for me to say...
I know I've gotten more generous in my voting, but that says nothing of anyone else. Also, I don't think DPC will ever be as generous as they were when the site started...go back and look at some of those scores.
Maybe one of the statistics wizards on the site can give better insight.

Well, either you are getting better of I am getting worse... so I hope it's the former :-)

If the voters have been more generous lately, then I have to add my name to the list of those who've been getting worse! LOL I'd say your shots look like you're improving (of course, that's what I'd like to believe too)... ;-)

Unfortunately, we don't have a way to view one's portfolio by date, that's what it would really take to see any progression. Remember a better score definitely means you are pleasing the "customers", but I look at whether work is "gallery worthy" (or art store worthy) as the true test. Certainly you have a number of pictures that meet that criteria (again, not looking at dates). One example is your minimalism entry--which I've always admired (but just added it to my favs!)

It's my gut feeling that the voters are getting tougher, not easier. Or, in any case, as the voter base expands dramatically the average vote is creeping closer to the center of the scale. I know MY scores (referring to my "good" entries, not my throwaway entries) are lower than I'd have expected, based on past performance. It's very possible that those with below-average scores are likewise seeing an upward creep, I donno.

Part of it is I am getting better - but that is a broad generalization. Better at meeting DPC voters wants, or better overall in technical, better equipment, better vision, better ideas, better in PS?
I try to look at consistancy and average. Anyone can have an out of the box idea and score a 3.5 and most anyone can get lucky and get a ribbon. There are few here that are consistent ribboners - and of those how many have improved to that point or are naturally gifted? Heida springs to mind - consistent and gifted.
That brings me to Neil's comment - portfolio improvement over time. Or more specifically, general improvement overall and appealing to the customer.
Equipment does matter. Of course you can take a great image with a p&s, but if you have a vision of an image you need the tools to capture/create that vision. Better tools allows one to capture a wider range of visions.
Appealing to the customer and 'art gallery worthy' - you must tell me what images are worthy of a gallery - a friend has a gallery and will do a show for me, but I haven't a clue what images to submit/create for it! To call any of my images 'art gallery worthy'makes me blush! Wow, thank you! I figure DPC to more like a calendar crowd - if the image would do well on a calendar then it will do well here. So I try to think calendar-ish for here.
I think I have bear-music to thank for my consistency - he once said don't try for ribbons, just try to beat your average and that has been working.
I know I have tried to raise my average vote given stat, and as my avg goes up here so does my avg vote received....I wonder if there is some dark hidden piece of code somewhere that effects this?

Hmmm...my "signs" entry started off great but then tanked, however it has picked up a bit tonight...not the typical shot I guess but I am proud of it and it's message anyway...back to puppies and babies and sunsets I guess.

No! The voters are not getting more generous! I know for myself, I'm trying to be a lot more picky about what I enter, and there's a lot of challenges I sit out because I don't have anything that I think will pass the muster. I still blow it sometimes and think something's going to do okay and then it doesn't, but one thing's for sure. . .they are NOT cutting anyone slack on bad or below average photos. So congratulations. I'd say you are getting better :) Good job!!!!!

I have been believing that the voters have been getting more generous lately. Look at the winning scores. When I first came here a score of 6.5 or better almost guaranteed you a top 10 finish at worst. Now it seems that there are WAY more 7+ shots that don't ribbon... Not scientific at all but a gut feeling.

I second that. My photo is currently stuck in the 4.5 range and when I look at other pictures that are voted that score in other challenges, I have to wonder what people are smoking. Especially when the scores are completely contradictory to the comments.

If you look at the challenge history, it looks about the same to me.
I dont see any spikes either up or down. But it does certaianly fluctuate. But I think that has more to do with the contest and no so much the voting habits.

Judging by the history (all 428 challenges) it looks like the following applies:
1. Voters are more reserved at giving out high scores represented by the 0.6000 drop over 428 challenges.
2. It also shows up in the avg and midrange scores as they have fallen off by approximately 0.2000 over 428 challenges.
3. It looks like votes are more generous on low scores as it has risen 0.3000 over 428 challenges. I guess all the talks about giving ones played a roll in this.
Just a chart that would in my opinion say your are improving.
