Anyone butchered their SLR to shoot IR ? I've got a D60 I'm thinking of getting converted.

Experiences? Suggested places to get it done ?

I've got a friend who did it. He says he can now only shoot IR but is pretty happy with it.

I ran accross a site which gives the instructions on how to do it, or you can send it in to be done. I'll search for it and get back to ya if I can find it.

Here's the site, not sure if this is what your looking for. Cokin came out with a IR filter.

The 20Da is quite different though, isn't it ? With an IR adjusted D60, you can shoot at normal speeds, in daylight and get IR pictures - isn't the 20Da specialised for astrophotography in a slightly different way ?

The hot filter on the 20Da is designed for high transmissibility of the Hydrogen-Alpha wavelength (656nm) which is near the IR range so it should have increased IR transmissibility as well, but I don't know for sure. I've heard of people having good results with it shooting IR, but haven't seen much in the way of results.

It also has a live preview mode, improved noise reduction and ISO 50.

It's certainly more expensive than converting your D60.

The IRDigital conversion seems to be the way to go. They don't give details on what exactly they do, but it would seem they replace the hot mirror with an IR filter so that visible light is rejected instead of the IR.

If you were to just hack open your D60 and remove the hot mirror, you'd need to add an IR filter over the lens. As I'm sure you know, these filters are nearly (or completely, depending on the specific filter) opaque to visible light making focusing and composing difficult at best.
