I was just looking at the homepage results from the last three challenges and realized that about half were flowers. So is this what needs to be done to win...make a shallow DOF pic of a flower? Surely there has to be something a little more exciting than a flower out there...

A flower with shallow DoF and some water droplets glistening off it and you'll have a winner :-) Provided it has good technicals ... lol.

Oh there are LOTS of other great and original concepts out there, some of which include:

Water drops
Macro bugs (preferably grasshoppers)
Colored pencils
Women in scarves
The Setting Sun
The Rising Sun
Places the Sun could Set or Rise
and anything including a pretty naked girl (assuming she has proper safety equipment on)

What's up with all the people asking "What's up" with all the stuff that makes this site what it is? :^)

I'm just jokin'. I guess we all get frustrated with something every now and then. However, I'm a lot happier now that I've come to this conclusion: "It is what it is."

so, what exactly are we supposed to photograph?

Great question. I say photograph what pleases you and accept the fact that it may please no one else.

Yes...I know I have flowers in my portfolio and I did submit a flower for burst of color. However that was a sort of last minute effort to get at least something in. (I have become addicted to the update button and didn't want to go another week without having entered something) In all honesty I would have voted myself a five if i had seen that image because it was so average and uninspired.

As far as the other flower images in my portfolio go I would not consider those your typical flower shot. Those were badly weathered fake flowers that were left on a grave and part of a series of image from a cemetery.

Blah...ok...I am a hypocrite but I still stand by the statement that there are more interesting things out there than flowers.

And that's the reason we spray water and glycerin on them :))))

Added: just wait till next week, they'll be lots of roads and signs all over the front page, can't imagine why though.

How about a naked chick holding a flower with a wet bug on it?

Quality, not content, is the determining factor.

Exchange overheard between two photgraphers on the streets of a major city one nice fall day.

Photographer 1 greeting Photographer 2 "Whuzzup Dawg!"

Photographer 2 returning the greeting "Whazzup my photographic brother!"

Photographer 1 "Same ole, same ole....check iiiittttt ooouuut, check it out!" he holds up a couple photo prints

Photographer 2 "Lemme see what joo got.....DaaaAAaAaammn! What is up with the m@ther fr*^&*ing flowers man..you going south of the border on me bro?"

Photographer 1...angrily grabbing his photos from his less sensitive friend "Hellooooo Mr. Eminem, these photos are more than flowers, they represent the continual struggle of the working class against the tyranny and oppression of the upper class..or..as we say...Da Man"

Photographer 2 ...peeking over the shoulder of his friend to see the photo again "Fo Shizzle? Hmmmmm...I ain't feeling the vibe dude. All I see is some blurry colors and pink little flowers...and..what the h3ll is that...some kind of tapeworm or something?"

Photographer 1...Violently thrusts his finger at the photo..pointing to the bug "THAT ...for your information, is a Megalopyge opercularis!"

Photographer 2 looking a little angry.."A say What? Did you just curse me!"

Photographer 1..speaking slowly "No, I said it was a Megalopyge opercularis..you know..A WOOLY WORM!"

Photographer 2..squinting a little more at the photo.. "OhHhhhhh! A WOOLY WORM!.....D@mn homie...why didn't you say so...no need to get all Howard Cosell on me. But what does a wooly worm and a pink flower have to do with oppression and 'Da Man'?"

Photographer 1 getting a bit excited "Well...you see..the flower represents the purity of the peoples spirit and the wooly worm...thats the organism of destruction...you know..Da Man!"

Photographer 2...looking a bit puzzled "Well, if the flower is the people, and the worm is 'Da Man'...what is that spot right there!" ..pointing to a oddly shaped orange/red splotch

Photographer 1..."Oh...dats my lunch man..I spilled some ketchup on it when I was at McDonalds"

Photographer 2.."SaAaaaY..what is that other photo you got..let me see" He grabs the second photo "D@@@@MN! That girl ain't got no clothes on! NOW WE ARE TALKING! "Hmmmmmm....I suppose she represents the struggle of the people against the bonds of culture and clothing?"

Photographer 1 "H3lllllll NO!!!!!! She just has some bodacious Ta-Ta's and she looks fine in leather boots!"

ROFL!!!

The flower shots were beautifully done. After a half dozen citrus slices in that Challenge, I was ready for flowers. (Not that some of the citrus slices weren't shot in an original manner!) :)
