I think the question first needs to be defined better:

Photo Equipment?
Photo Art?
Photo Technique?
Balanece of all three?

I personally am looking for more "informational" magazines that deal with "photo techniques".

I think I bought a copy of Shutterbug, whatever 'zine it was had an article about shooting at night. That's exactly the type of thing I am looking for. A 'zine which has articles that show or feature a method, or technique, etc. Love critiques and the "two pro photogs" reviewing photo submissions.

- Lenswork, because it isn't about cameras - it's about photography.
- PhotoLife because it has interesting, thoughtful articles
- UK Practical Photography because of the good mix of articles and creative ideas

Ones that I used to subscribe to but aren't worth renewing
Outdoor Photographer - same old, same old every edition. Incredibly superficial articles, even the ones that make it on the cover.
American Photo: celeb & fashion photography and gossip
Aperture: too arty for its own good
Digital Photography & Imaging: basically just ads
Nature Photographer: not too bad, but again, same old articles over and over.
Shutterbug: Nothing but ads
Professional Photographer: Business of photography focused. Wedding and portrait mainly.
PEI - shut down/ turned in to professional photographer

I buy two photographic mags.

Photo (France) and Digital Photographer UK (with cd).

I'm not sure why people find DP UK boring... its an amazing and complet mag. Lots and lots of informations on different themes. Lots of suggestions and tricks for Photoshop very good interviews with photographers, always a few 'scene setup' exemples to practice and better understand concepts. and cd full of workshop tutorials material as found in the mag.

As for Photo (France), well its a very interesting 'photo' magazine... not much in interviews or tutorials, but great photography most of the time.

if i'd have to choose between the two, i'd take Digital photographer UK anyday.

I like American Photo and the French version precisely because they do focus on celebrity shots among other things. The last issue I bought also had a story on photojournalism that wasn't being published in the US because of content. These were stories on how the KKK is growing, one Marine's struggle after losing his leg in Iraq, and eyewitness photos of the School Seige in Breslan. All were moving, significant and well done, but not published in the US for a variety of reasons.

I just looked up Lenswork, and a magazine that puts a picture by Dorothea Lange on its cover must be worth the subscription. Question: all the covers are b/w. Is it only b/w?

I just ordered Outdoor Photographer due to the recommendations. Got 3yr subscription on ebay for $7. Pretty slick.

Yup, all the photography is black and white. Mix of digital and film processes. But it really isn't about the tech.

Thanks. I'm not particularily interested in "the tech." :)

I haven't checked out Lenswork.

My son works at Barnes & Noble. I just gave him a call to have him pick me up a copy.

I also get Rangefinder. A lot of good info for portrait photographers, photographer profiles and the like. Nice mag.

I picked up Lenswork when I was in the US in November as it had an image by Nick Brandt on the cover - I'd recently been to an gallery showing of his work and bought his book too and was eager to read the interview.

Reproduction quality is astonishingly good.

Cost is really high.

It's more about showcasing photographers and interviews than tips and tricks so depends what you are looking for.

Those articles were in mine. Maybe it is different if you have a subscription or buy from the newstand.

I thought those articles were great, as well.

I think I got a free subscription to this by filling out a survey at FreeBizMag.com -- if you work in a photography or graphics-related business you may qualify for one.

I picked up the newest issue of "Lenswork" in Spokane. It's a small magazine, beautifully done, fun to read (and think about).

I just subscribed to lenswork "extra" on cd or dvd or whatever, after I've been buying it the last couple of years. Far and away the best photography magazine on the market in my opinion. With the subscription on cd, you get more photos, more interviews, etc. It's really a great magazine and the publisher is a pretty amusing and interesting writer.

I have started reading a copule of magazines printed in the UK (can't remember the names right now). I think one is called Digital Camera and I think the other is Practical Photography but don't hold me to that. The reason I pay the OUTRAGEOUS PRICE and buy single issues is because I can't get subscriptions here. However, the first reason is that they seem to be more about photography and PS instruction than 40% ads to sell me something. Most of the magazines printed in the US seem to be buying guides. Heck, I have the camera....I want to learn how to use it!!!

Just my opinion though.
