Nikon Uk has announced that they will discontinue film cameras (except for the F6), manual focus lenses, and enlarging/LF lenses.

Wow! Is this the beginning of the end for film cameras?

Almost. There are some manual lenses being manufactured and the F10 will be manufactured for ex-EU markets; list here:

Nikon is also discontinuing all 35mm film compacts:

I think that the beginning of the end started some time ago. Dixons announced an end to selling 35mm film SLRs before Christmas - sadly ironic for a chain whose very first product all those years ago was a 35mm SLR.

Sings..."It's the end of the world as we know it....and I feel fine!"

The truth of the matter is that althought digital technology currently does not quite compete with B&W low-iso film. It will within a decade or so surpass it. In fact, the quality of color digital became comparable to 35mm film thanks to the low noise about 5-10 yrs earlier than expected.

It's just a matter of time...

It is now in the mainstream news. The news is obviously concentrating on the discounting of the 35mm cameras, but the lens news is more disturbing to me (I'm sure my F3, N90s and Nikkormat FT-3 will probably out last me). With the new D200 finally adding functionality with traditional manual focus lenses and with Carl Zeiss introducing Nikon mount manual lenses, I thought that the manual focus lenses were safe.
