Well, I have a HP Pavilion zd8000 - customized. And I love it. Have had no problems with it. When my desktop computer crashed, I started using my laptop exclusively. They say it's a desktop replacement, and I believe it. I take mine everywhere - including out into the field when I go to dark sky sites to do astrophotography.

Base price is $1299.99 ($1249. after rebate), but as I said, mine is customized, so mine is closer to $3000.

I can also say that it is what my nephew uses and he is on his second tour over in Baghdad. Not sure if he took it with him this time, I know he did the first time.

Without reading the other replies, I recommend this:
HP zd8000

My husband is Navy and we picked it up at the Navy Exchange for roughly $1750. We love it so far. It is big...a 17" screen. My husband plays video games, and I do the photography thing so it is nice. One thing I like about the size is it has the number keypad on the right whereas the smaller laptops do not have room for it. We just moved to Guam and are without a TV, but we have been watching TV on our computer since it comes with a TV tuner. If I wasn't into photography, it would be a desktop replacement. I prefer CRT's for editing photos, but this laptop does a pretty good job and pictures look beautiful(after calibrating the monitor that is).

When we were shopping for one, the second we saw this monitor, my husband was in love. It is really nice. My sis has a Toshiba that I like very much as well.

Just an idea to put into your head. Your son can get it tax-free at the Exchange. I know we got a pretty good deal on this computer from there. It would have been a couple hundred more if we had bought it elsewhere. (Our does have several upgrades)

wonder if he's ever seen a mac in action ?????

I have a 2 year old apple powerbook 867MHz, it has NEVER had ANY software, hardware or operating system problems, it was set up 2 years ago, and the only matenance done is to upgrade the CS to CS2, and run software update once a month, I've had to reboot 3 times, as there were big system upgrades, otherwise I only close the lid, never turn it off or reboot manually. and it's lightweight, ridgid, beautiful, and works great... all aluminum cover, no plastic like on ALL pc laptops :)

"the spyware/antivirus is the fault of the user not the computer... "

Actually, it's the fault of the Operating System. A user should not have to worry about browsing the web and looking at a graphic on the web and having their system infected.

Furthermore, I once accidentally mis-typed a website, which re-directed me to another website, which popped up another window which re-directed me again.

The next thing I see is a dialogue informing me that "Comet Cursor" is being installed on my system.

I was furious, called Comet and flamed them out and demanded to know how to remove said offending software.

"Windows running on an Apple machine, isn't that one of the signs of the impending apocalypse????"

1. Apple to launch new Intel based laptops

2. Microsoft releases Xbox360 running a tri-core PowerPC processor.

Is hell !@#$% cold or what these days?

Also, realize there is a big difference between the consumer models ($799 units) and the upper levels of business and art machines. My Toshiba P25 is built quite solid. Many of the new $699 laptops I've seen are lighter builds.

This basically holds true for all companies (HP, Dell, ex-IBM, Toshiba, SONY, etc.) The actual exception is Apple. Apple's iBooks record for holding up is substantially better than their upper end Titanium line. Go figure.

Lol I've been doing IT work for about 20 years. Mac OS is no better than any other, Remember working in a computer store where our Mac sales guy was trying to Steal my sale by telling the customer that Mac OS was more stable, he walked them over to a MAc system I stood watching, he tried to launch an app and it failed and locked up on the spot, He couldn't even get the thing to shut down and had to pull the power to reboot the system. And thats just one experience. I have seen MAC OS lock crash and burn plenty of times, Now it does not seem to as often but when it does it dies with a passion. Many people blame MS for system instability in their OS but alot of the time it is actually the result of some other application(and app devloper) replacing a system file tweaked for its use that breaks when another app calls it. Linux still has many bugs and stability issues... I can go on. I just recommend getting over it heck listen to three dead trolls in a baggie "every OS sucks" a few times and then get over it

Mac OS- Flawed
Windows = Flawed
Linux= flawed
BeOS= Flawed
Solirs= Flawed
Unix= flawed

Not since a C64 have I seen a "stable" OS and even it had issues!

I have both and I have NEVER had to reboot any of the macs nearly as many times as I have faced the Windoze BSOD. While I agree that no OS is perfect, my experience is that Windows is much farther from perfection than Mac.

And don't even get me started on hardware installation, MS just makes it so much harder and complicated.

Go for IBM.
I have used Toshiba, Dell, HP, Sony, Fujitsu, Apple.
Nothing last as long as an IBM (though their chassis design leaves lots to be desired). The IBM laptops can withstand drops and abuse. Definately a very durable machine. They hardly fail too.

My marine got a pretty low end Dell. They have so little time to use a computer that he figured he's get something better when he gets out (26 days, but who's counting - its been a long four years). Everything gets out dated so fast, one eight month deployement sets him back, technologically. and he had three.

Ah! The 'Ship of Theseus' paradox;

"In one episode of Only Fools and Horses, the road sweeper proudly displays a medal to anyone who will look, which he was awarded by the local council for having contributed to the community by using the same brush for the past 20 years. He then proudly holds up the brush and claims "Maintained it for 20 years. This old broom's had 17 new heads and 14 new handles in its time." When Sid inquires how it can be classed as the same brush, Trigger angrily shows him a picture of him receiving the medal and demands "Well there's the bloody picture! What more proof do you need?"

Did you ever decide on a laptop Kel?

I just ordered one. Dell 9300. Will be shipped out on or before Jan 30th. (I hate waiting)

I was just curious if you had and what kind you decided on! :)
