I've been here for a little over a year now. I have learned so much from this place that I'd like to have my daughter give it a go. We got her a nice cybershot and she is excited to learn more about how to take good pictures. I think the challenges are a great way to make you learn.
She is only 13 and my concern is with some of the people that she may encounter here. Should I be worried? I don't want perverts pm'ing her. I don't really know what goes on behind the sceens. Are there younger people here who might relate?

Quite a few actually. smartypants and nightshy come to mind, both teenaged girls with a solid head on their shoulders. Why not PM them?

hey;
I have been here since almost the beginning and I will tell you this, this is about the cleanest, most well monitored site on the net.
Granted, we let the artistic freedom run and you will encounter nudity and some cursing but I will say ....I would feel safer here for child of mine (and I have an 18 year old daughter) than just aabout anywhere.
If you or your daughter were to receive any inapropriate contact..you let the site council (moderators know) and they will deal with it..although I have not heard of this being needed they will come down like a ton of bricks.
Just remember, this is an international site and there is nudity here but it is very minor...nothing you wont see in an art gallery.

I joined when I was 19, so not as young as your daughter, but I know that there are other youngsters her age here. Joey Lawrence, nerdynotdirty, annah, and a few others come to mind, and I've never heard any of them mention having had problems. All in all, DPC is generally friendly and seems about as safe as a net site can get.
As far as PMs go, the ones that I've received have all been very polite and helpful. And it's my understanding that if she were to recieve some kind of inappropriate, perverted PM, the sender could be reported to the Site Council, who would not be amused and would likely step in.
Hope this helps.

i don't think it should be a problem here?
the site is well maintained and we're all here for a common goal, to better our photography.
if someone makes an unacceptable comment, i'm sure they will 1. be banned for life 2. be kicked in the teeth.
:-)

You could always setup a free e-mail address for the account and keep access to it, if you want to monitor it. I'd say it's pretty safe place, generally.

Does your daughter have email now? If so, do you monitor it to see what she may be getting? I think that this is a good practice anyways. I wouldn't worry about what users and members here may send her as much as what email farmers might send if they get her email (which I don't think anyone should have on their profile page regardless of age!)

My 11 year old daughter is a member here. I gave one of MY email addresses and set up her DPC homepage to NOT show any forum threads.
I am not at all concerned about the nudity - she'd only say "eeewwwww" and move on in a hurry, anyway. LOL.
I feel very relaxed about her having an account on this site. |

i think nudity shall not be problem, since todays children encounter nudity in early ages (from lot of sources) and you can not stop them. I remeber i watched my first full porno by the age of 13. One thing she might learn from this site though is how to see nudity from artistic perspective.

Open her mail, listen to her phone calls and follow her around with a big tele lens while your at it. I'm sure if she has a problem she'll tell someone. No need to steal her privacy in the name of protection. I believe the President just did this and he's in hot water for it now.

Hell yes! I'll even take his bedroom door away! Call me wierd or something but I believe in paying attention to what is going on. After all he's my responsibilty!

I don't think this is relevant to the conversation...

From a seven year sex crime detective who has testified as an expert in 3 states, put the computer in a common area in the house and monitor what she does and who she talks too. This is not for who she may encounter here at DPC, but ON THE NET in general. There are people out there who are waiting to "groom" your child forevery perversion you can or can not think of. If you don't think they are out there, Google "teen model" and see what comes up on the first five pages and this is just the open and out there stuff.
I always run into the parents who say "well, she needs her privacy". My response is always that the net is called the information highway for a reason and If your daughter (or son) were on any other highway and a 50 year old man were to try to stop them and talk to them, would you still want them to have there privacy.
Sorry to jump on my soap box but the moral of the story is, watch what they do, keep their computer activities in the open, common area of the house and let them know you will be checking. They will have a tendency to come to you with any solicitations if they know you check.
Hope this helps |

My point is unless your child is a retard she can also watch out for herself. Don't underestimate children.

Do you want you child to grow up thinking 1)everyone has the right to strip her of her privacy and 2)Everyone is evil and out to get her. I agree watch your children but remember they're people too. Also maybe you should try talking to her.
BTW I'm not talking about the child in question. Blanket coverage. I don't know anyone here that well.

danderson,
I live in a town of about 100,000 people. In the past 2 years over 50 children from my town alone have been lured, enticed, solicited and attacked by computer pervs. They have been priests, teachers, police officers, fireman, computer gurus, bank employees, boy scout leaders and on and on and on. Not one of the parents would consider their child a "retard" NOT ONE. Grooming is a profession for pedophiles. Whatever it is that you excell at, pedophiles excel at grooming children for molestation. People like you not only put your own children at risk, but the children of others when you preach what you obviously don't know.
Be careful, you may cause irrepairable harm to a child. |

.05% isn't to high. How many people died there from car accidents? Will she/he be allowed to drive? I don't want to start any arguments and this seems to be getting out of hand so consider me silenced.
P.S. I don't plan on having children.
