Offend is too strong a word. It makes me sad that so many people are so willing to take such an extreme left-brain view of such a right-brain pursuit.
Of course these photos aren't going to be what you would interpret the challenge to be - by definition there should be a couple hundred photos that are completely different than how you think the challenge should be interpreted. It's art.
Give the artist the benefit of the doubt - free your mind of the fences that surround - and embrace their view for just a moment. That is what makes art so cool - you can see the world through someone else's eyes for just a moment.
Threads like this seem to celebrate and encourage this thought process "DNMC according to my (the voter's) very small view of the world - so plunk down a 3 and move on". I think that is an incredible disservice to the photographers that worked hard on a challenge, and to the voter for not taking a moment to see the world (and the challenge rules) from a different perspective.
Hence I age a little from saddness of the lack of tollerance. | +
I know you will never change your mind on this, but I really believe that the purpose of the challenge description is to provide a "fence", or framework, for entries. You can be anywhere inside the fence, but if you want to be outside the fence post your shot in the forum instead. I look at the challenge description and try to find a way to creatively meet the challenge. That takes more creativity than just deciding to make everything a free study. No one has ever said (I don't think) "Don't be creative". In this challenge, the subject should stand out from the background because of color. There are many ways to do this--colored background/light subject, light background/colored subject, but to submit a colorful picture DNMC, and taking a good photo that meets the challenge was the point. |

My fences might look different than your fences, or be in different places - all I ask for is an open mind for a moment to where the fence "might" be in someone else's world.

If the challenge is "shoe" and you take a picture of a boot, I could say shoe=footwear. If you took a picture of a shirt and titled it "above the shoe", or a picture of a foot and titled it "it could be in the shoe", my fence just can't get that large. This description is "Use a colorful impact to offset your subject from the rest of the photograph." Colorful impact--can't be b&w; offset--stands out from the background. This, to me, means there should be a clear subject of the photo, and it should be different from the rest of the photo because of color differences. |

Then I'll just title it 'Shoe-horned into the Challenge'

After watching two threads regarding Burst of Color, I am now doubting that I made the right choice of entries for this challenge. I'd like to get opinions on my runner-up if anyone has the time
Thanks |

I had a very difficult time with this challenge and ultimately decided not to enter which is very rare for me! Color burst to me means something like fireworks or a balloon exploding with colored water (which I tried by the way and didn't like the result). I haven't looked at the pictures yet but I suspect I will not see many actual "Color Burst" shots. I will grade generously though. If I like the picture I will grade highly regardless. |

It's a shame you needlessly narrowed your interpretation of this challenge so tightly and missed out on entering a fun challenge! Guess we'll see you in the next one. ;^)

I like your photo a great deal!
Here is my outtake. LOL....I HATED the sky, but loved the outhouses as the subject which I thought was unique. LOL...Went back to reshoot and the sky was great. The only problem? The company took a lot of the outhouses away leaving little for color left. :( So, out came another photo I had in back up TOTALLY different in subject matter, but you know what? It is scoring very well holding a 6.3 with 60 votes. You just never know I guess.

I have already had a comment stating " I don't think the colour offsets the subject" CRAP. This challenge, as far as I am concerned, is about colour and impact. This sort of argument is one of the reasons I don't enter the challenges too often.
There is a disqualification link, if you really feel that strongly, then click on the damn thing and let the "powers that be" decide.
End of rant........ |

Not meeting the challenge is not grounds for DQ.

Hey that's not on! You've just identified your entry in the challenge and are now lobbying for votes. Keep it fair huh.

Oh come on! It's almost identical to an image that is in the challenge. I arrived before yesterday.

If it's identical.....It sure beats the hell out of me, or we are looking at a different set of images, cos I can't see it. |

I think this has to to with another thread I started. LOL...Sometimes people just say things to be funny and stir the pot. I take no offense to Kiwi. Probably just a humorous act of fun.

Wow! What a controversy. I looked up "offset" and now I know why, there are six or eight definitions. LOL!
My dog in this race has gone lame because I never looked close at the difinition to begin with, my mistake. But for those interested here is the definition (my guess is #4 is the one they were looking for):
Main Entry: 1off·set
Pronunciation: 'of-"set
Function: noun
1 a archaic : OUTSET, START b : CESSATION
2 a (1) : a short prostrate lateral shoot arising from the base of a plant (2) : a small bulb arising from the base of another bulb b : a lateral or collateral branch (as of a family or race) : OFFSHOOT c : a spur from a range of hills
3 a : a horizontal ledge on the face of a wall formed by a diminution of its thickness above b : DISPLACEMENT c : an abrupt change in the dimension or profile of an object or the part set off by such change
4 : something that sets off to advantage or embellishes something else : FOIL
5 : an abrupt bend in an object by which one part is turned aside out of line
6 : something that serves to counterbalance or to compensate for something else; especially : either of two balancing ledger items
7 a : unintentional transfer of ink (as from a freshly printed sheet) b : a printing process in which an inked impression from a plate is first made on a rubber-blanketed cylinder and then transferred to the paper being printed
- offset adjective or adverb

You know that you are all nuts. If its got color and that color is separate from the rest of the photo then it meets the challenge. Unbelievable. And so what any way. If its a good picture with bright colors isn't that enough? Sheesh.

I haven't voted yet but if it's a good looking shot and the colors stand out somehow....well actually if the colors stand out in any way then I'll score it high.
