Yeah, I think the key here is transparency.

Disagree. The winning shot will most likely be an animal (Lion for example) with strong backlight highlighting it's fur (individual hairs detailed). Transparent would be the easy out. ;^)

:( Wish I could do that with mine, but it would definately end up a silouette if I did. But, I have another idea. I just have to ask permission to shoot it though. LOL...

It depends on how much front light there is... look at the birds on the posts example above. Back lit but more then silouettes. I stood there for 1 hour taking various exposure shots as the sun rose giving me different amounts of primary background and reflected forground light. gl.

Can someone define 'silouhette' as it applies to the challenge? Is a silouhetted subject void of most/all detail?

Well, when I think of a silouette, it is usually totally void, yes. However, I took a WHOLE slew of shots yesterday on a photo excursion. I was mystified when I got home and overly excited at the same time. I now have about 15 backlit photos to choose from, and all of them are great. 90% don't even need post processing, and it was so HARD to choose. I went with one I felt was the best for overall appeal and tech's, but I tell you, it was rough going and still may be. I am not sure if I chose correctly or not and am still debating now...LOL

In any case, back to your question, there were some I took while out that were in direct corrulation to the challenge of backlighting and taken purposely for the challenge. Now, although they aren't TOTALLY void of detail, they were close enough for me to not want to bother using them. It is just that I had other choices, otherwise I may have. So as long as they are not totally void of detail, they are usable. Just ask yourself when viewing it in full, "will others perceive this as more of a silouette than not?". If you have any delemma, I would change it.

Challenge: Silhouettes II

Prior conversation on the subject (Silhouettes): Silhouette II ... WOW!

A definition I found helpful on Silhouettes:
"A silhouette is defined as an outline of something that appears dark against a lighter background. This usually occurs by exposing for the background, which underexposes the subject and produces a silhouette. Some silhouettes completely erase discernible detail in the subject, while some allow small areas of detail around the edges of the subject to maintain depth."
