So, how'd you make out the other night with the vote?

I've been waiting for the outcome too. Hanging chads? ;)

No, just dimpled ones.

Oops, sorry. The meeting went well. We had some pretty heated discussion about other issues before we even got to the projector so I was kind of worn out and not really interested in dickering around by then. We had some more bogus excuses ""How on earth would we get the files to you?" "Umm...email, usb key, cd, etc." "We'd have to put it on a cd every time?!" Etc. But I only had to ask if we couldn't just act like adults once and the end vote was overwhelmingly in favor of digital. Woo! So now we will haggle through what sort of new categories we need and will begin showing digital next year. A lot of the members were rather excited so I'm pleased.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Just as a note, some clubs run digital slides as part of the regular slides competition so no new categories would necessarily be required.

I agree. This would give you the chance to work through the technicalities of receiving and showing digital images without any added complications from special categories.

If you think of it, keep us posted from time to time.

Well, tonight's our first digital night. I purchased the projector in November and have..umm...tested it out (for club purposes only, of course!) on a few of my photos. I've been kind of nervous because, even though pretty much everyone voted in favor, I've really been the organizer of this whole thing and I'd like it to go well. But the good news is that we already have 17 entries! Since we only get around 30-35 slides per salon, 17 photos pre-entered (who knows what people will bring with them) is pretty good for the first time. I'm looking forward to showing them to the guy who said that digital is coming but it's not here yet.

Who said that?

Send him my way...almost all the big guns that my company used to develop film for (4 national geographic photographers, 2 photographers for people magazine, 1 film director--Sissy Spacek's husband..forgot his name.. and many others) all have gone digital..including our studio.

Yes. Do let us know how it goes. My photo club allows digital, but only in print or sllide format. They're planning to add a projector next year, so they are open to the idea. However, because they are primarily a competition club, there will, inevitably be necessary rule clarifications.

Friday is the night when we can bring "anything goes" digital art. It will be judged and scored but the scores won't count. (I suppose that's to encourage folks to just try it with impunity....)

Good luck, tonight, mk!

Looks as if we are all jumping into the pool. Last year my photo club had digital exhibitions, using our new digital projector. They went well and made it possible for entrants to share information about their images.

This year, starting tomorrow night, we have digital competition head to head with slide competition.

I'll be interested in your report on how your evening went, MK.

It was great!

We had 19 digital entries and only 11 slides. Good turnout! Transitioning from the slide projector to the digital took no time at all and the digital presentation went very smoothly.

The best part is that some people were really excited and it was people who haven't submitted much in the past. One man, who I don't think has submitted in the almost two years I've been there, submitted 6 (the max). People said they felt more inspired to shoot now that they know that they can bring their shots to salons. And we had a new guest who shoots digital and might actually come back. (We have lots of visitors who never come back...ahem undieyatch.)

The digital doesn't compete with the slides, it has its own category, divided into the same 6 categories that slides are. I can only ask for so many things at a time.

Good luck to everyone else that mentioned that their club was transitioning!

Ourt club is in the same boat, but most of our new members have digital cameras as do a lot of older members so we do not have as much anti feeling, I would say 90% of members voted to purchase a projector,. We are looking at funding for this from various sources including the lotteries commissin and other charatable bodies. Our club has the money to purchase a good laptop for this .
WEare at present evaluating the projectorsx

Your post got me interested in seeking out a local camera club..then you got into the politics of it. NO THANK YOU. A couple of months back i resigned an organization that i had been a member of for 12 years, and past president (amont other offices). Your comments about 'leaving the club' and 'you need a $10,000 item to do it' type of mentality just drove me nuts.

As to the projector, the club i belonged to had just bought one (slide projectors being obsolete). I read up a bit on them, and, well, none (under $10,000 LOL) are all that great at true photo reproduction as compared to a slide projector. they are getting better, and probably are a great idea for this use though.

I do sympathize with your position. Hopefully your VP is not on the opposite side of things as mine was. But then I only ran because he did and i could not have remained a member had he won. In the end he did win i suppose as i left and he did not.

I'm reporting in on how our Club's first Digital/Film competition went last night.

In a word: Splendidly.

I didn't get an exact count, but my estimate was about 55-60 "Pictorial" images, entered. We began at around 7:30, and ended, including intermission, judging, and talking about the winning images, at 9:45. It helped to have an excellent judge well versed in digital as well as film.

We showed the images concurrently. That is, first the "A" slide entries, then the "A" digital entries and on up the line. They were judged separately, with separate awards.

We then send our winners on to Regional competition. So, the 1st place winners in each category will go on compete against other Clubs.

Well, it's been four months of digital. It's been competely awesome. We're tripling the number of slide entries now and the setup and running is no problem at all. Some people email their entries ahead of time and most bring them on cd or usb key right before the meeting. I've got the naming convention set up so that we can just throw them into a folder and run the Windows slideshow.

Even better, three of the four people who voted against it because they were NEVER GOING DIGITAL have already bought digital cameras. :)

Great!

I saw some of my photos projected, and was underwhelmed. The pictures didn't have the contrast they do on my monitor, and the colors were way off. (The projector was older, and may have been only 400:1 contrast, the school was too cheap to buy a good projector, etc).

Sounds like you are having a much better experience. Do you calibrate the projector? What parameters were important when you selected the projector (contrast, lumens, etc)?

Dredging up an old post because I know how much wavelength loves that. :)

I'm preparing to head out for our last camera club meeting of the year. We're into the final judging phase now but we had ten months of digital meetings. At the end, I did some tallying and it was pretty interesting.

We had 5 members submit a total of 66 slides.
We had 4 members submit a total of 18 prints.
We had 15 members submit a total of 215 digital images.

So I think I can safely say that the addition of digital was a success. Next year, we'll combine the digital and slide categories and do subject-based grouping only. We're also starting off the new year with a series of tutorials by a local photographer so that we can cover such topics as "I downloaded my photos...now where are they?" Baby steps. :)

Congratulations, MK! Looks like you've done a good job dragging the club kicking and screaming into the digital age. Keep up the good work!

mk I was delighted to see your post about your camera club's results from this year. My club is about a year ahead of you I think. We did exhibition digital images last year and in January started head to head competition on "Projected Images". (First we project the slides, then the digital in each category and level.)

It has worked smoothly all year and at our yearend judging (last Saturday) the winning Projected Images seemed to be in the same proportion as the digital/slide categories you detailed. Or in other words, the best photographers still received the highest places and they are spread throughout digital and slide competition.

One of the big advantages as far as I was concerned came in the yearend judging. Because all the digital images submitted through the year were already on the computer the Club uses, the Digital Chair just pulled out the winners from the year's entries and entered them in the finals. No more hunting around for winning slides. Yippee.
