Though I have always said that "1" or "10" score only should require a comment
01/04/2006 10:43:59 AM · #77
"I can see this point. Maybe make it an option for the person recieving the comment to suggest voter disqualification due to inadequate comment. But require it to be a valid complaint and only for those that just put "fksdk" or such. ANY comment that has validity can be used, whether to just boost an ego, or to tell someone a fault. How long does it actually take to put "needs more color 2" or such?"

Exactly. I have a very good idea that I will be bashed for my opinion with what i am saying, BECAUSE THIS HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP A MILLION TIMES BEFORE. Well... if so many people feel so strongly about it, maybe a simple change is neccessary. I know I don't have all the answers to possible problems with my idea...but if you have an opinion as why it wouldn't work I would like to hear it to see if I can think of a way FOR it to work.
Right now I just can't really see the faults. NEW members benefit highly from feedback-even if very simple, people will be more concious and accountable of their voting, IMO I also belive more people would stay with DPC as well as join for EVEN MORE positive feedback about this website.

Steadily dropping from 7.0 to below 6... time to kill the update button. I'll check again on sunday...
*dissapointedly turning scores off in the profile*

And, could you go and reopen the comments thread elsewhere please?

Yup, if someone can explain how to link it over or make it simple would be happy to. Just not that tech savy with the website yet. :)

yes everyone recieves the same voters...BUT why not make someone accountable. A 3, 2, or 1 IMO and according to the website as well deserves a comment, and is a picture that needs improvements. If someone really feels like the photo deserves that score they should be responsible to take 30 seconds of their time and let the person know how to improve their shots, or atleast let them know what they do not like about the photo. I have climbed almost back to a 5.4 and I believe it will climb back up (cross my fingers), but as posted there are many people with very low scores that just get more and more frustrated when their average is a 3.8 and nobody tells them as to why. Not only is it no fair, but is just poor business for DPC. I hope that is not taken in the wrong way at all. By that i just mean that this scenario may have a strong impact on why people may not decide on a full membership or may go to another site.
I just think it is a little change that could make big differences.

A vote of 1, 2 or 3 is a comment...they hated your photo, thought it was really good and got jealous, just got a bad score and got pissy with their votes or just like to throw darts at the world ...I think any one of those is a comment :-D

A lot of people are not really great communicators and lots of people like anonymity when voting..whatever they vote..high or low.

I think anonymous voting is closer to the truth..overall... than if people had to be scrutinized with a comment.

I have said it before though..the day we force people to leave comments is the day we should eliminate all anonymous voting and every vote and it's owner should be viewable..anything else is not fair.

Still dropping!

I'm voting on the concept that the shape is supposed to be the most important aspect of the photo. I usually just leave positive comments on images that I score highly. Low scores usually go to super small images, where I can't see the detail, or badly focused images...I don't want to leave snide comments and ruin somebody's day. They'll figure it out eventually. I'll leave the technical comments to somebody who qualifies. ;)

This is how I feel. usually, I only leave comments for low votes (4 or 3 and under) if I feel it doesn't meet the criteria or would have been a great shot if one of the elements (ie: focus) was off. Conversely, I always try to comment on high scores (6 and up) because I think it's important for people to know that certain elements they emphasized were not lost on the general viewing crowd. Plus, everyone likes praise once in a while :)
As a newbie here, the comments are one of the most helpful aspects to this entire process. Mine doesn't have any yet, and it's a little frusterating because I don't know why my score has dropped.

In response.... How about in the voting system if they would like anonymity they can have it. STILL must leave a comment though if they leave a 1, 2, or 3. And if your comment is "ahjjdfsd" then you obviously would not like to participate in rules, and could still be subject to DQ for a brief period of time similar to photo DQ. If you vote that low, as DPC recomends in their rules you should comment as to why you feel that way. Honestly that is incredibly childish if you can't take 5 seconds to say what you didn't like, or what could be improved with the picture. If you felt so strongly that that is the score they deserve then explain simply. I am not saying nobody can score 1, 2, or 3. that is the voters choice. Just saying to take a little tiny bit of responsiblity and give a bit of feedback.

Also if someone can explain how to link this over to another post I would appreciate it. thanks.

The only 2 comments are positive. One of them has one suggestion. I am being a sour puss about it I know...just frustrating.
Did a little math...last night like i said my scores were mainly 6's and 7's. too bring my average down voters were giving me an average of 4.46 lol
I think I gave out 3 or 4 4's the entire challenge after voting on every entry. I love it :)

Exactly what happened to me... I was at 6.1 last night and currently am at 5.1... The only comment is a strong compliment.

(Dang...guess you have to use the whole quote?) :O

I'd rather err on the side of "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." I might be more outspoken if I was voting anonymously, but I'm not into that. Some of us new people would rather let the more experienced members state the specifics. I'd rather compliment someone if I can.
I've received 1, 2, and 3's, but that doesn't bother me as much as snide comments from anonymous voters. (I DON'T want to get that ball rolling again...LOL...just my opinion!)

Nope...just make sure the ending quote in brackets is there. ;^)

Well, after 4 years here..I am just saying it ain't ever gonna happen.

Frankly, if you need a real critique by good photographers...just start a thread. You will get a lot better feedback than some member of the public saying .."That canyon photo has been taken a million times..Booooring...I vote it a 1". If you are even able to get someone to say that much :-/

Well, I'm about to go voting and commenting. So for those of you that are discouraged, cheer up. I plan on giving high scores on this one!

You rock, Rose! :)
Only about midway through voting & commenting here.

Well, i'm cheerful because so far, i'm doing slightly better than my only other challenge. Disappointed, because like many of you, i had a nice start and it's dropped rather sharply. :) But i've gotten more comments this time around, and they reinforce what i already thought about the image, so that tells me my *eye* is improving.
01/04/2006 01:07:31 PM · #94
I hope those that are happy got the 10's I gave out. If you did, you got a comment from me saying so.

I think all of the photos were great though!

I'm kinda disappointed. I have over 60 votes and a score of 4.3. Not disappointed with the score cause it's my first entry but I'd like to have some comments. I have 1 comment.

Things have improved...just hope I can beat my personal best for this one, has a bit to climb yet though.
I have had as high as a 6.8 in this challenge and as low as a lol. Emotional rollercoaster!

I've made a slightly belated New Years resolution... I'm no longer gonna gripe about trolls, because every photog here gets the troll votes. I'm not gonna complain about my score, I get what I get.
01/04/2006 02:43:12 PM · #99
i went to bed with a 7.99 and woke up with a much more plausible 6.6
the lesson here, for everyone, is never trust the first 50 votes.
My image did not deserve a 7.9, it is much more so in the mid 6 range, i know it, you know it, we all know it. So enjoy the rollarcoaster for what it is, but don't take it to heart!
