honestly...who keeps the original file of EVERY pic shot throughout the year?

i have some i really like, but i don't have the original, so i guess i'll have to submit something more lousy.....arrgh

us nerds do. at least we keep the originals of photos we liked... :P ;)

I think you'd be surprised by the number of people that keep every image. With the ability to fix and alter images now a days I have a hard time deleting anything. I know RAW takes up room but I still will keep those over edited ones.

i guess i'm going to have to be more nerdy...and buy more storage.... ;)

If an image is good enough to be considered your best of 2005 I would think you would want to keep the original of it. I dont keep originals of all my images but I keep the ones that I think are good enough to warrant it.

whoo hoo! saved by a backup...

they're not all there, but this is definately a lesson learned!

I know where you're coming from. My choice I can't enter because I can't find the original RAW file, even though I swear I still had it! :(

We do (I know I know). I like to have a complete numerical sequence of everything I've shot to remind me of the failures as well as the better ones.

I must confess it does fill up the DVD's quickly with 15.5mB per image (2,150 of them since getting the camera 29 July 05). I must, I must remember to trash the TIFFs of the really crappy ones.

I back up all files. Even out of focus ugly ones. All get saved to external HD in folders with date and subject

I'm being urged by my computer whiz brother to buy an external hard drive. I keep all of my original files and am up to 125 gigabytes of images. He says that I could program my computer to automatically download new files nightly to the external hard drive and in the event of a computer crash I would have everything backed up. In the need for quick evacuation due to fire etc. it could be quickly disconnected and taken with me (after my son of course) haha.

I have an internal 300G hard drive and an external 300G to back it up.

Guess what? They're full. ARGH!

I'm having to archive off pictures because I just can't keep up. I shoot a family gathering, there goes a gig of file space (RAW files, JPGs, PSDs). I do a family portrait series, there goes another gig. Every little wedding chews up another 3-4G just in RAW files alone. I can't keep up. I hate archiving files because I know it'll become impossible to find anything over time. But I can't afford to keep buying bigger hard drives all the time...

So I'm a nerd. AND a packrat. I've know that for a long time! :-)

i keep my originals, if I am going to edit any image i always do a "save as" or if not its already backed up on my iPod or dvd's/extrenal hard drive. I just keep backups of everything.

Yep, I save 'em :-)
Got a small hd, but a BIG stack of cd's :-P

...never know when you might want to re-visit an original, like, maybe a best of 05 challenge or something ;-P
or other reasons :-)

Create an archive folder on your harddrive with 1/2 sized jpgs. Write the folder name on a DVD and burn the RAW, TIFF, PSD files on it. BreezeBrowser lets you easily create Proofs to any size. I imagine other Image Management software can do this too.

All your working and final files still have the original filename in them somewhere, right?

I burn all my originals on DVD. If it's a client job or one I have shot for a challenge, I do this immediately after uploading. It's good to save as many as you can that are worth keeping. I know I have gone back to some after a couple of years and much more editing experience and found I had some that were much better than I originally thought.

I'm a nerd too. I save originals of everything. I store them on an external hard drive and burn to DVD's

i shoot over 100,000 images a year and have every single keeper on dvd, cd, and 2 external harddrives, as well as all the ps files, and all the final results files. why? because that original file is my negative, and memory is too cheap to justify throwing things away.

it really makes me shake my head when i hear the excuses people give for not keeping originals. it's like they either don't get it, or they don't care...

I keep every one also. I save the raws, delete the tifs after making psd's.

Dvd's are cheap, external storage has gotten huge. And who knows, maybe one day there will be a DPC best of the worst picture you ever took!
01/03/2006 11:38:59 PM · #20
I save the raws 2x and the edited tiffs about 3-4 in different ways and places...

does that make me paranoid?

I just recently had to go through my 130gig hard drive (cause it was full) and I went through every folder of stuff that I had shot since I got my 20D (about a year now) and erased every shot I knew I would never use, which was about 70-80%. It was very liberating admitting to my self that the out-of-focus under or over exposed badly composed image was never going to be anything but trash..... Really, it felt good. Then I backed the rest up on DVD's and an external HD. :-)

i have been backing up ever since my first post...burning cds...slow, but its all i've got...don't want this to happen ever again.

and you're right..i might want to go back and re-edit at a later date.

I kept the originals for almost every photo I took in 2005.. only about 15gb though. I was slacking until I bought this camera in november, that's 3/4ths of the images at least.

I keep all the original photo's and edited photo's. This way I always have it when I need it and if I need to post an edited version then I have one available.

If its not your best then why settle for something less if your not happy with it???

I have the original of every digital image I have ever shot dating back to about february of 2001. That takes up about 60 or 65 DVDs for archive.
