I know lots of us use PS or another "tool" to brighten up our photos and I was wondering, if something is obviously tampered with - why do people tend to look down on it?
I have found my fondest photos (IMOO) are the ones that are really "hacked" by PS and the ones I have fun with but those tend to be "disrespected" by the majority. I like to see the before and after... am I alone?

No, not alone ... there are many sites devoted to digital art. There are many here who 'play' a bit too 'disrespectfully' with they photos as well. But in all, and despite the trends, this site is still mainly about what can be done with the camera, not photoshop.
As for the image, looks interesting, but I think you may have gone a bit too far. The loss of color detail reminds me of what images look like when viewed at a low color bit depth. It was probably the effect you were after, but some areas (such as her face) have lost too much detail for my tastes. All just my opinion, of course.

well for this example it doesn't look like a photo anymore. It looks like something you could paint or draw. Now there's nothing wrong with that as an artform, for sure! I just doesn't feel like a photograph anymore.

yeah there is a line where your photo stops being a photo and becomes digital art and this site is generally directed to photography

Left you comment - I love it! :-) However, IMHO the DPC audience is definitely geared toward a more traditional interpretation of photography. And while I really get off on the processing end of things (and frequently go too far), I find that the group here keeps me pretty grounded.

DPC helps in that to make a truly stunning graphic arts image from a photo, it helps to start with a good photo.
I myself like to see how far I can push things in photoshop. Been playing with healing brush and cloning a LOT lately.
But, when I come back to Earth, my bread and butter depends on a "realistic" photo.
