Thankyou all for the good scores I received. For those 22 who scored me below a 4 on my picture that is fine, its your choice to vote whatever you would like lol, but going through my comments....I saw nothing about how to improve my photo from any of those low scorers. If you score me that low you could atleast let me know why you felt that much of a difference of opinion from other voters right? Atleast help me improve? This post isn't as serious as it may sound, I am just a little frustrated because I am just picking up photography and wanting to improve. It was a fun challenge though and thankyou very much for those who did take the time to comment for me :) |

Hey, you know what? I got 67 4's on my Shallow DOF entry.
A beautiful shot of duck eggs frozen in time by winter. I called it Winter's Forfeiture. I loved the title, and the shot. It shows shallow dof, the subject is unique and well photographed in my opinion (considering I had no prior knowledge about shallow dof and used a point and shoot that has a mind of its own..LOL), and yet I got something like 267th place, so don't feel bad. As for comments, I don't remember seeing a lot of constructives in mine, but I didn't get hardly any at all. I'm surprised I got as many as I did get considering the amount of entries, but that's fine. I'm not one for comments being left on my photos anyway, so no biggy.
This challenge was VERY subjective, and with so many preferences on dof, it was really hard to vote on in my opinion. I don't agree with the ones that did win either. I personally chose the mushroom one to win..LOL..I think it was called "stand tall" or standing tall. Loved that one, and gave it a 10. It got something like 40th place, so that isn't TOO bad, but could have been better.
This was just one of those challenges where it was a crap shoot. I'm just moving onward, and better luck next time. As a matter of fact, the photo that did win? LOL....I had about a million of those that I took the same day as the eggs, so go figure! LOL...

53 votes 4and less
the depth of field is LESS than 1mm
i realize now i should have angled the shot so just some of the coils were in the 'zone' of focus but i like this shot for the color and the definition
ghosting was teh erflection of the element in the REAR of the bulb .. kind of cool .. |

well I'm probably openning myself up to a lot of pot shots here because I didn't enter that challenge but the main things I saw in the DOF challenge that I thought could have been improved are...
Shallow depth of field does not mean NO depth of field. Just because there is very limited depth of field doesn't mean it was used well. Depth of field should be used to focus the viewers attention on the subject. If your subject isn't even in that field there's nothing to look at.
sticking a bunch of stuff in front of the lens and having it blurred out just for the sake of having it there doesn't help a picture usually. Blurry backgrounds that are indistinguishable are not the same as blurry foregrounds. In general it's better if the viewer can tell what is in the foreground to help explain the picture.
Lastly there were shots that had great depth of field but not a very interesting subject. I understand the challenge was DOF but if the subject is not interesting it will not score well here regardless of how shallow the DOF was.

This was my very first challenge entry and overall I'm pretty happy. 2 favorites and several nice comments. The one that struck me funny was the comment about it being blurry around the cat's face as I thought this was a DOF challenge :). Another asked me if it was Gaussian blur lol. However, I did notice some wonderful shots that finished behind mine and I'm certainly stunned as I felt a few of these were not only deserving of a higher score, but a ribbon as well.
Also, Sunshine86, you'll see that I commented on your photo during the challenge. I thought it was a great shot indeed!
Thanks to dpchallenge members for making my first challenge submission a great experience. I'm learning all the time!

I don't mean to be complaining about the scores, my point is just that I wish if those people score so low if they could give me feeback on how to improve or what specifically they did not like about the photo. 4 and below was a total of 77, 22 was 3 or below, sorry I don't think I was clear about that :) If i only had 22 4 or below I would be very happy lol . |

I received 34 4 and under, and no explanation either! I only expec teh 3 and under to say something, as 4 is still average-ish. I know of at least one voter that vots ALL people pics low. Nothing one can do about that.
Was mine - my highest scoring pic to date! Thanks all! It was up to a 6.3 at one point...would have been 18th, but 28th (92%) is fine by me. Here's hoping for a few DQs ahead of me...LOL not really. (yeah right)
A few asked about the color version -
I liked this better, but thought the red shirt pulled the eye away from the hand and this being DPC i went with the 'hit 'em over the head' philosophy. I think i went too shallow, as he is too far OOF, but again, this is DPC.
To Sunshine86: I think the 'distrubing' nature of your image was part of your 'problem' score wise, and more shallow DOF would have helped. DPC likes 'pretty' pics. Harsh, distrubing, graphic images don't do well here.

I wouldn't count on too many comments unless your photo is one of the 10 best or one of the worst with a real controversial element in it.
I don't comment a lot but I vote 100% on every challenge I vote in. I think it is more important that I vote and give each and every person participating in that challenge to get a vote..not just the 20% to get my vote to count.
I would really like to see anonymous voting go away. That has been my only desire for change the 4 years I have been here. That way people who voted could be solicited for their opinion on why they voted that way. There are already rules in place to protect voters from abuse so I can't really see why we are anonymous...ego? |

Or just blantantly show your ass ... LOL ... it's a good way to rack up 70+ comments and 60 1's :-)

You smell....Oh...you mean your PHOTO! :-p
Seriously though...I was thinking of going back and for every person I voted on leave this simple note...( i did this for a bit years ago)
6...Hokie
That way..whatever my vote...the person can contact me and ask about it.
What do people think? I'm sorry...I am too lazy to vote on every photo AND give detailed comments....But..I would ber willing to discuss your photo if it was that important for a person to get some feedback. |
