I did a photo shoot for some friends of mine...for free mind you...and they liked the first one better than the second. The first is straight out of the camera, no editing. Would you have chosen that one?

Yes. The photoshopped one is too much IMO.

Something in between may be better. Ask them what they feel is wrong with the second or provide a third option.

Of the two though the first has more appeal even though it seems to need curves/levels applied.

Please explain what you mean by "too much"? IMO, the first looks like a snapshot and the second looks finished and professional. What am I wrong on?

I agree that the PS'd version is over-processed. It has a very unnatural look about it.

I would also pick the first one - the PS one is unnatural to me.
12/22/2005 10:43:12 AM · #7
I'd have to agree ... the second has a tad too much PS work done to it.
12/22/2005 10:44:28 AM · #8
Sorry, the first one is more natural. The other one is too overprocessed.

I agree. The second one has a "plastic" look to it.

Seems to be oversaturated. Also, it appears that you have used too much "diffusion?" the lady appears to be plastic.

honestly... the highlights on the PS version are blown and the shadows are burried ... it looks like Neat Image or something else was used to reduce the noise way too much... the eyes have a reddish cast to them... it looks generally way to over processed. I too would have picked the orginal.

Sorry to be harsh ... but I have to callz em as I seez em on this one.

Go back to the start and use a light touch on your post processing. The basic image is fine ... it just needs some "enhancement"

good luck

although i like the bg blur and the darker bg on the second one their faces are way to bright and blown out. it looks as if you had your flash just a foot away from their faces. although this works for fashion photography it doesnt work here because it is an event picture. its a picture about something they would like to remember as close to what it was.

here are some examples of when it works..

I have to agree with the previous posters, the Photoshop in the second is pretty heavy-handed. I don't think what you did was necessarily bad, it's just that you did too much of it.

I'd definitely go with something in-between the two you've posted. This is what my suggestions would be...crop, clone out a few distractions over the guy's shoulder, lessen the brightness in their faces, and blur the b/g a bit. Just a thought. I'll take this down after you've had a chance to look at it. :)

In addition to what laurie did, I'd remove some of the bright spot on the lady's chin.

Ah yes... sometimes less is more.

Looks pretty unanimous to me.

Nice work Lauriel.

I think the main thing wrong with #2 is that her face is almost blown out in the highlights, there's a fine line on the glow effects between fantasy and reality.

I'd do an im-between also - coz of what everyone says for No. 2, but in No.1 the ornament above her head is Very distracting to me personally - so a background blur would help.

I think that one makes them look scarier and less real.

The thing that bothers me most about the second one is that the guys hair blends into the background so I don't know where his head ends and the background begins. One of the hardest things to do when shooting people is paying attention to the background. You're so focused on the people you forget how the background can affect your final product. This is the mistake I make a lot.

My take on it, just a quick one.
curves, a slight desat and hue shift on the faces, pulled the BG out to a layer and did blur, +sat and then put them back together with a gradient (that does not show up well in the small image) to give a 'halo' effect to kep the bg somewaht receding and darkish, but to get some seperation between it and their hair.

If the file you posted is as it came out of the camera, see if you can reduce the sharpness setting in the camera. It's usually best to do the sharpening on the computer.
