Do you know those filters that make lights appear as "stars" with rays of light beming off of it? I've been asked to do Christmas portraits at church this weekend, and there is going to be a christmas tree with tons of little lights on it, so if I got a star filter, would all those lights be overkill, or how would that work?
Thanks!

Tom I have tried to use mine a few times, but it usually ends up way too overbearing when there are a lot of light sources in the pic.

Perhaps consider doing just a few starbursts via photoshop, instead? Or at least try it both ways.

You could just do a long exposure with the smallest aperture and let physics do the magic for you. It's a bit more subtle than a star filter

I've used cross screen (4 point star) filters on Christmas trees before and it usually looks great. Unless the ambiant lighting is extremely low, the little bulbs on christmas tree light strings aren't enough to make huge stars, perticularly from the distance you'd be at for a portriat. For example, there's a shot I took of our christmas tree in my blog, a few posts down. Last year my boyfriend and I took portraits of couples at his parents holiday party with a tree in the background and used a cross screen filter and they turned out great (people love the star effect)! (I'd post examples, but I'm at my parents for the holidays so I don't have access to my files). You should be able to get a CS filter for under $20 unless your lens is an unusual size, and they're lots of fun, so I'd definately recommend picking one up. If in doubt, take a few test shots.
