SO far 6.0402684563758389261744966442953% of the site members used dialup.
So what does that mean? I didn't read the whole thread, what is the point of this?

If it didn't take me so long to go back and re-read it I'd tell ya. ;^)

in another thread they said there are 35,000 users - so it means only 2.13142857142857 % of the users have voted. Considering the broadband users are more likely to visit the site (because they don't have to dial in)it's likely more broadband users will have voted than dial up users.
The poll is inherently flawed anyway because we can vote multiple times. So if I want it to seem like there are a lot of boradband users I'll just vote every time I visit the site. |

Not true. You can only vote once. |

and how exactly are you doing that? you can change your vote, but you can only vote once |

I just did that to see what would happen. The numbers adjust accordingly as expected. |

My mistake. I voted earlier but have to use dial up tonight so voted dial up, saw the number go up but didn't notice the other number go down. Sorry about that. Carry on. |

Where is the mass of dial-up users I keep hereing about? |

Evidently, there's not that many of us. We're just vocal because we're so fed up with dial-up. It's just not fair. Wwwwaaaaahhhhh. |

It probably self-selects to a certain degree. I've used the site on occasion over dial-up and it's basically unusable - so there isn't likely to be many dial-up users around. The barrier to entry is really high. |

I've had broadband at home for about 5-6 years now. When I have to use dial-up, I barely even check e-mail, let alone try and use a site where I will be downloading lots of graphics, etc...
Also, Cable/DSL have been traditionally categorized together, but these days, Cable Internet is often as fast or even considerably faster than T1. DSL can range from quite a bit lower than T1 to about T1 speeds (give or take) at least in my area.

I was going to make a joke that it takes to long to answer polls on dial up.
Then, I realized it wasn't a joke. Honestly, unless I have some vested interest in something, I rarely participate in onlne polls, etc because it takes so durn long.
Or maybe it's just --
Dial up = Rural area = redneck = people who don't "do" photography |

Brent,
According to W3 Schools and Browser Stats, 85% of internet users use 1024x768 or 800x600 resolution. That's really the only majority that counts - people want to be able to see the whole image. They can't at 800px tall. Only 14% of all users have a monitor resolution large enough to see 800px full size. It's just nyet going to happen yet.

Those results are a little skewed since they figure in all the corporations that use Lower quality business monitors. |

40k connection here. 100+ challenges, 2000+ forum posts...
It works fine for general use. Voting is a pain in the neck because it takes awhile for each image page to load.
Unusable? Don't think so.

All stats are skewed. To put anything else would be to say "all high res monitor owners have high res monitors." Ok.... but that's not a majority of home owners either I would bet.

Was that presented somewhere as a written statistic, or just speculation?
I noticed at W3 Schools that they mention their browser statistics are a bit skewed because of this (excerpt from W3 Schools website): "W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies.".
Can we speculate farther that "people with an interest for web technologies" would also have more up-to-date equipment (monitors, etc...)?
Additional info available at the above posted link regarding monitor resolutions, OS platforms, etc...

Have you seen election turnout results lately? A big turnout is 20% of registered voters. Typically it's about 15%. That's just the people who are actually registered, if you look at the numbers as a portion of the population, it's an even smaller percentage.
Like it or not, much bigger issues than what size image to accept are decided by a very small sample of the people affected by that issue.
I would have to say that a poll of a very small sample of the website users is democracy.

Ya know, being a rural person here I take offense to that.
Three years ago I had a choice to make. COntinue living in the city (had cable internet, etc) and live where my kids can't play outside safely (and pay out the rear end for a crappy apartment) or move to upstate NY, live on a couple of acres of land where my kids can have a swing set and a pool and play outside (and pay 1/10th of what I was but have a 4 bedroom 2 bath house). I chose moving. Now, being rural, we are on what is called a remote terminal for our phone line. This is a pair gain system meaning the max connection we can get is 28.8kbps (pair gain splits the normal line in half therefore halving a 56k to put it simply). While we could go satellite ($650 set up and $75 per month) it wouldn't work for my husband. He is an online gamer (Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies, and World of Warcraft to name a few) and the latency would make those games unplayable and therefore not worth the expense. At the moment, we have a kick butt computer that is making the slow internet speed inconsequencial to his gaming. We have looked into getting DSL and Cable, but would have to put out approximately $35000 to get cable run to us IF our town would agree to franchise with Time Warner and get those who live down the hill cable. We would have to pay for them to run the lines, etc the 2 miles from town to here. Since that isn't going to happen, we have to hang our hopes on Verizon getting us FIOS as they are promising.
Now, I vote regularly and comment and participate here with little to no problem. I use an accellerator for basic viewing and Mozilla Firefox for voting. Should DPC decide to up the image sizes it really wouldn't affect me much. I do, however, agree with those who wish to keep it as is. For one thing, should I choose to go Satellite, I have to pay extra the more I download per month. Some actually cut you off when you reach your quota. This would seriously curtail my participation here at DPC. There are other factors than speed that need to be considered when looking at this issue. Those on DSL and Cable seem to forget that.

I use my mobile phone to view the site, and it works very well as it is!
Interestingly, this debate could be cut very short by the simple act of posting a large in-line image into the page...!

And short of being obnoxious, why would you do that? That certainly wouldn't halt my participation in this debate. I'm a tenacious witch when I am irritated. There are may ways to get around large images if you choose to use the technology available to you. I could very easily hit the little red x on my browser halting the download of said picture but keeping the text of the discussion. Pictures load last for me and have cute little placeholders until they are done thereby letting me read everything else. I could also turn up the compression on my accellerator until your large picture looks like a blurry pointellist painting. |

I'm thinking there was a wee bit of sarcasm in Karmat's post. ;^) I live out in the country myself (13 acres...most of our neighbors also have horses, etc...). 40k dial-up for me out here and no cable TV. I wasn't offended...just a little sarcastic humor to lighten things up a bit. I'm thinking legalbeagle was doing the same thing.
Anyway, smile and keep having fun! ;^)
