yay - I just got a 50mm f1.8, think I'll give this one a go...

Isn't shallow DOF and bokeh the same thing??? Hmmmmm - I think I can actually achieve this. I've not been very psyched about the past few (well, except for catalog)

GOOD LUCK ALL!!! Phobia just doesn't entice me in the least. I'll leave that up to Joey Lawrence and Graphicfunk. tee hee

Hmmmmmm - No.

It helps to have a shallow DOF in creating good bokeh, but shallow DOF in itself suggests no such thing.

I'm glad my 50mm f/.95 just arrived!

Who am I kidding...

hehe... should have saved my knife fork spoon photo for this challenge:

(btw... the in focus area measures about 1/8th of an inch deep...)

this challenge is certainly right up my alley, though... woohoo!

A challenge my camera will do!! I take it P&S is a point and shoot? Perfet. I usually have problems with my DOF being too shallow but this is perfect! Now what to shoot......
12/14/2005 11:19:52 AM · #32
Nice, now we can break out some macros to shorten the DOF too! Maybe this will be the first challenge i participate in, in quite awhile... (even tho it's finals week right now)

i found this, macro lenses wide open are really rediculous.
small DOF

This was one that I did with my G3 and a "macro hack" that I read about on some forum. Didn't score very well but it sure was shallow!

perhaps if you get a filter, and then put vasaline on all the parts except what you want sharp, you can create a type of DOF effect that could be useful for the challenge. Worth a try.

That's what stays locked on anyway. I have a few ideas.

I said it when I saw the challenge title, "expect lots of eye shots..."

An eye shot does not necessarily depict shallow DOF. The horse image has quite a deep DOF, just extremely closeup.
12/14/2005 05:00:24 PM · #40
shallow DOF is pretty much my normal style of shooting so i'm excited about this challenge! :)

Huh? The 85mm 1.2 is not known for its close focus. And @ 1.2 the DOF is like half an inch. :D

The perception of shallow DOF is relative to what you're shooting and how you're shooting it.

... remember, the lens details will not be available to the viewer while voting. Showing some context usually helps there.

Just want to know from you guys, do you think the DoF is shallow enough in this image(shallow enough to make and impact in this challenge that is). This is about as far as my cam will go. So, just want to know if I should start researching phobias ... lol

take some clear wrap and rub a thin layer of vaseline on it, leaving an image circle free. Try shooting through that. Should really blur the edges for you. ;o)

If I understand correctly, you don't think the horse shot shows shallow depth of field?

I have not done a challenge here in a long time and I really like this topic. I did horrible in the last challenge I entered, so hopefully I have improved.

I don't see how you could do any worse. :)

Good luck with your next challenge.

You should pick up a book on photography. It might help.
