I have been thinking of buying canon and concentrate on portraits, I wish to use this zeiss lense with canon. Do we have any adapter by which i can do this, i wish to buy canon 350D body (new year wish list). Please advise me.

why not get the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 ? it gets even greater reviews than the Zeiss lens

yepp, i am looking at that option also, but this zeiss lense has really impressed me.

While we're all pitching our fav lens makers how about the Pentax-F 50mm f1.4. It's sharper and resolves better than any other 50mm according to MTF scores.

I started photography with Mamiya 1000s with 50mm 1.4 lense. And that is best that has come in my hands, but one day i dropped the camera and spoiled the lense. After that i brought a vivitar camera with its default lense, that was useless. Then i brought one pentax 50mm 1.4 lense. I am not sure whether this is Pentax-F 50mm 1.4 or not but this lense does not come close to what i got with mamiya.
And that mamiya pics are the reason i am trying to get as good plannar lense as possible.

I'm surprised to hear that.

It's fairly well known that Pentax are one of the few lens makers who stuck to the "classic" planar design.

All? others have shaved production costs by making the surfaces between the fourth and fifth elements flat.

See here for Mike Johnstons article from a couple of years back.

cheers,

Well i do not say that pentax lense are not good, i like that also, it is just that most of the pics i took from mamiya, i felt as if they are not the pics but a moment of life, where as pentax lense i can only say good picture or wonderful picture but that feeling of moment of life never came from it. I already have lot of stuff to go with pentax mount. I am not big fan of canon, but this time i thought of trying canon, thats why i was thinking of buying 350d body, but somehow i have a feeling that pentax istD will be better for me than canon if the film pentax lense can go with digital pentax. What do you say.

All the entry level cameras have the ability to take good shots and it's shown by the mix of ribbon winners here at DPC. Generally speaking, it's the best submission that wins the ribbons and that has nothing to do with the best equipment. The Canon has the advantage of an extra 2 mpixel but unless your printing at larger than 8x10 you won't see any difference however it does allow some additional headroom for cropping.

The Canon also has an advantage as far as noise profiles go but in my opinion it's a marginal advantage in the real world. I mean does anyone have a 100% crop of a color swatch @ ISO1600 hanging on their loungeroom wall ?

With that in mind I'd choose the body with the best mix of useable features at the best price. In my country the Canon, (sensor aside), has the least features and is the most expensive by a long way. Pricing may differ in your country.

If you already have some good Pentax glass then thats a good reason to at least have a look at it before making a decision.

One more thing to keep in mind is that we can expect to see new dslr bodies early next year from most of the dslr manufacturers. This will provide more, (and better), choices and push down prices of existing models.

hope this helps,
bazz.

To the OP's question, there is an adapter to mount Contax-mount Zeiss lenses, so if that's the mount on your 50/1.4 Planar, you're in luck. You can find them easily on ebay by searching "Contax EOS Adpater" though I cannot vouch for the quality of the adapters offered there. cameraquest.com offers a high-quality adapter, but the price is pretty high, I believe $175.
The Zeiss 50/1.4 Planar is supposed to be among the top performers in the 50/1.4 class, so it might be well worth getting an adpater.

Stephen Gandy at Camera Quest sells a very high quality Contax lens to Canon body adapter. It is pricey at $175, but I know from personal experience that the adapters he sells is of the highest quality.

Even though i would be happy if i won any ribbon, but i happyly would not mind not winning any. It is not that i do not like winning, its just that i am working on bigger project that has taken 15 hours a day for last 1.5 years and i rate my winning there many times bigger than here. Its just a matter of priority.
I only wish i could shoot what i imagine. I have point and shoot sony and my entery for 'too late' is not what i imagined. Its around 5.75 in score and some comments said that it would be better if this was like this (like i originally imagined).
About lense, since i am not photographer professionally and i already have a costly hobby (oil painting), i would only be buying once and then there is nothing that i will buy for at least three years, i wish to buy once but very good. I might end up with canon and some L lense.

Anyway thanks for all of you who took time to write responses, i really appreciate. Thanks again.

One more thing, there is news that canon 50 mm 1.2 normal lense is coming into market.

The 50mm f/1.2 will use an all new glass design; will have a faster focus than the 85mm f/1.2. It might not be fastest focusing lens, but it will be fine for portrait work. The biggest improvement will be contrast and sharpness. It will also be weather sealed and of course it will have the L build quality.
