This will be the first year I have a DSLR for the kids' Christmas concert. This will be at a parochial school, so it won't have great stage lighting.

What type of WB should I use? From the sports pictures thread (color casts and lenses) you all contributed to recently, it seems AWB can be better than custom WB, but sometimes the program director uses colored stage lighting. Would that confuse AWB? Should I just use Tungsten (assuming I check the stage lights and they are incandescent)?

I plan on not using flash for most photos (and can change the WB settings to flash in post processing since I'll shoot RAW).

Any suggestions for WB or any other tips for taking photos at the show?

I'd go with Tungsten WB (that is if the lights are Incandescent or Halogen) This way .. colored lights will show the intended color also, unlike Auto that will try to correct for it.

I could be VERY wrong here, but you said you're shooting RAW.... doesn't that mean you don't need to worry about white balance?

Oh yeah, I missed that... very true... don't worry about WB

Mmm, I've shot a lot of theater, and I'm on auto WB. Never really had a problem..

Even though I usually shoot RAW, post processing is easier if you get the WB right in the camera to start with. Guess I'll consider it a "learning experience"
