You might want to take a look at the Tamron 1.4x converter. It's supposed to be pretty good.
Here's a Sigma vs. Tamron 1.4x converter review by Petteri Sulonen:

Worth reading. Oh, and the downside to using the 70-300/4-5.6IS with a 1.4x teleconverter is, that the resulting aperture at 300mm will be f/8, thus crippling the autofocus on non-1 series cameras. You can trick the cmaera by taping the pins, but often it's just a waste of time as the lens will just hunt on and on.

The Canon extenders only work with the L primes and some L zooms and not any of the consumer lenses.

I use the Tamrom 1.4 and specifically bought it over the Canon 1.4 because it worked with my 100mm macro, along with my other lens. :-) It is a great piece of glass (I have heard that it can have some softness in the corners, but since I shoot digital with a 1.6 crop, never noticed any problems).

spelling problems corrected :-)

They will if you put the 12mm extension tube inbetween. ;o)

LMAO!
With that setup, you could as well work with extension tubes in the first place. |

It's also how you stack the 1.4 and 2x together.
