Are you guys kidding? Scamming is respectable? You think its cool that he tried to rip someone off? Cool that it weeds out stupid people?

It's repulsive.

How about beating up people smaller than you and stealing their money? Would it be ok? I mean, if the people don't go to the gym enough, its their fault, right?

Unreal.

It's only a scam when you don't tell someone EXACTLY what they are getting. This auction stated several times what the buyer was getting.

This is why you READ everything on the auction before you bid. LOL!

Still, this is bullshit. These are the kind of people who clutter up eBay and the rest of the internet with bogus crap so that search engines turn up things totally unrelated to what you are looking for. I'm glad the wannabe con artist got the boot.

I agree with you 100% nsbca7. Sure, he stated that it was a just a photograph a few times throughought the paragraph, but it's obvious that his intention was to deceive. For example, he included the system specs and talked about how good it was and everything. Now that kind of deception should DEFINITELY be punished by Ebay. The buyers should have read through it all, sure, but they should NOT be subjected to this kind of crap in the first place.

I've never had a problem on high dollar items. I bought a $6800 lens on eBay (from a dealer I had done business with before) The only times I have ever had problems on eBay the items were under $25 and my money was later refunded.

I completely disagree with this, Brother Ward. Just because you're actually telling people what they are buying doesn't mean you're not also deliberately structuring the rest of your ad with lots of tecnical informationa nd details and description that will lull the unwary into a stupid purchase. It's a scam, and stuff like this is a scandal.

IMO, to condone it is essentially to say "It's ok to rip off dumb people by dazzling them with bullshit", which is exactly what scam artists and con artists DO, isn't it? They take advantage of peoples' gullibility and misperceptions to sell somethign essentially worthless at a terrifically inflated price. It happens all the time in the real world, stock scams and real estate scams and what-not, and it's a crime. It may be that the way THIS one is structured, because it's on the internet, this scam is technically legal, but that doesn't make it any more right IMO.

If you owned a grocery store and a customer paid you with a 20, and you noticed a c-note stuck to the back of the 20, would it be "right" for you to pocket that?

Robt.

Dave, they ended up with only a 4x6 photo of a system, for twice the retail price of the system. That is what is insane about this one.

The person that ended up with it had a feedback of 39 so this isn't the first auction that they have been in on.

12/07/2005 02:23:10 AM · #35
The ad was clearly designed to decieve while staying within the letter of the law. The title for example used the word pic not "Photograph" and the inclusion of system specs etc was designed to confuse. Good on ebay for banning the seller.

Can you imagine any circumstances where a buyer would knowingly pay $650 for a 6x4 PICTURE of a system that sells for half of that? No? Thats what makes it deception - if the buyer had realised he would never have paid that sort of money.

Some people's time is more important to them than money. They would rather pay a $200 premium on a system to not sit in/outside a store all night waiting for it.

This argument you make about waiting would work for your Canon Rebel too. Why buy it now when it will certainly be much cheaper in six months from now (just like the first one)?

Before you call people idoits and dummies, take time to think.

Of coarse not, you should give the c-note back. The ebay auction is a prime example of the old saying " a fool and his money are soon departed", which obviously lives on today.

This is funny.

Obviously the scammer should get busted and the buyer smacked in the head.

But...

This is funny.

Actually, I didn't say time is more important than thinking. I said time is (to some) more important than money. If you make $300 an hour, why would you wait up all night (8 hours) to get an Xbox when you could just pay someone a premium (200-400) to (in theory) do it for you?

I paid 299 for my xbox 360 on costco.com and it was delivered to me the day it was released. To my, time and money are both important.

Hate to call you out on this one Eric but the Rebel XT was released in Feb 2005. That was 10 months ago and it is still the same price for the most part at stores. The price on it won't change much either until Canon puts out another Camera to replace it or the 20D.
As for calling people idiots and dummies, if the shoe fits wear it.
If you were a unsuspecting person relatively new to photography and came on here and said, I just bought a new 70-200 f2.8L on Ebay for$2100, I'd call you a dummy too!! I have no sympathy for people who don't read and or research before they buy or do something and then cry when they didn't get what they thought they should've.
Although it is sad that there are people out there whos main goal is to deceive, people are ultimately responsible for the decisions they make, informed or uninformed.

Dsmeth, the Rebel 350 was on sale at Dell yesterday for $599. The price has dropped significantly. The time, 6 months vs. 10 months is a red herring on your part and irrelevent.

I differ on opinion with you. I believe that people should be honest and fair. If someone is gets taken advantage of because they aren't smart, I still believe its wrong. The person who bought that "pic" didn't come here and cry about it. We're talking about whether or not its ok to deceive people like this.

I believe that things can be wrong, even if there is a "loophole" or someway to get away with it. That's why I don't steal music and that's why I don't think its right to dupe people, "stupid" or otherwise.

Of course, these people that you have called stupid, idiot, and dummy tools can actually be other things that made them not catch this con artists trick - like busy, trusting, hasty.

So, to repeat:

Did anyone else notice the minimum first bid - $25 - clearly unreasonable for a snapshot type image, further evidence that it was a scam

I'm not disputing the fact that is or isn't fair or honest.Do I agree with what was being done? NO! I won't buy off Ebay just for the simple fact I don't trust most individuals.
People have been lying, cheating, stealing and killing since to the beginning of time and will contiue to so long after you and I are gone. So whether or not you think it's right or wrong, it's still your job to cover your ass.

Edited out camera prices. I'm not gonna have that debate. Iknow how much they cost at Best Buy and some other places. Gotta do your research.

I've made several small purchases on eBay, CD's, DVD's, clothes, and an underwood typewriter, and I've never had a problem with getting any of it. I always carefully read the description of the product, check the photos, and in the case of CD's and the typewriter, I always send the seller an e-mail or message asking about the condition of the item, and if there are any scratches or dings not evident in the photo.

The man was obiviously intending to scam, and for that eBay is right in getting rid of him, even if it was technically legal. They're trying to maintain a site where auctions are legit, and you get what you pay for.

However, all responsibility for this clear case of fraudulent intent is on the buyer. It clearly states that it is a picture, even if it gives the specs.

The buyer got what was coming to him, and the seller did too. If you can't be bothered to read a few lines of text, what's going to stop you from popping a couple pellets of rat poison instead of your Allegra?

I think con artists and scammers are repulsive and due harm the free enterprise system. If you find them intelligent and think they work well in our society....so be it.

Are you running PC or Mac?

If it is PC then you are supporting perhaps the biggest con artist there is: Bill Gates is probably one of the biggest. If you don't believe me watch a documentary on the man.

He's not a con artist, but a modern day Robin Hood of sorts. He donates millions of dollars to charitable agencies and for conservationist efforts. He also claims that he will give the vast majority of his wealth to charity, not children, upon his death. He may be ripping us off, but he is in some way making the world a better place for future generations.

Now this ebay guy: if it were me that won the auction I would be supremely pissed, but since I have the common sense to read an entire auction listing, I must say "shame on you" to the buyer.

I find it kinda ironic on a digital photography site to find a long thread claiming that photographs are essentially worthless and couldn't possibly cost $500+ for a print ;)

Suppose Ansel Adams or HCB had taken the picture - is it worth $650 now ?
As I mentioned earlier, I've sold pictures this size for roughly this price - was I scamming the people who paid me for them ?

Discuss ;)

If you are used to eating your Alegra from a certain bottle and one day pop a rat pellet from the rat poisin box then I would say you needed a good dose of common sense. If, on the other hand you take your Alegra from the same bottle every day and one day pop a rat pellet in your mouth that someone had maliciously placed in that bottle, well... This is the same thing. People are surfing eBay and seeing so many similar adds stuctured in a simmilar fashion for the same product that they automatically think this is just one more legit add.

This person purposely structured his add to look very much like a real add for an Xbox. The word "pic" in the title in no way gives away the fact that this is an add for a picture. Many adds have the word "pic" in the title to let the buyer know they have a picture of the product they are selling.

If you led the buyers to believe they were getting an Xbox with your 4x6 then you were scamming them. And if your prints are in the same realm as the image of the Xbox then I would refrain from comparing them in value with a vintage Adams.
