i'm totally with bamaster on this one, folks. he's not guilty of doing anything but trying to make things light-hearted. and i, for one, appreciate it. tony's 'you so ugly .. ' joke was so obviously meant in just a light-hearted kidding around way. it's the kind of thing i would say!
for the record, i have little to no problem with lighthearted forum posts ON ANY TOPIC WHATSOEVER. if it is boring to me, i will not bother to read or respond to it. as a site council member, i feel no desire to control what people do and do not talk about. i have no desire to flex my muscles and show people who's boss. that's not how i like things to be. i like and have the utmost respect for all of my fellow site council members but none of them are speaking for me in this case :) ..

Not offended, but I'm not happy that I'm getting my hand slapped publicly. Yes I think I can post to the General Discussion forum if it fits the description, and yes I think Site Council warnings should be private. I think I'm owed that respect when I paid for my membership.
So yeah, I am still not convinced that off topic threads should not be posted in General Discussion. Notice the description and notice that it is not in the Photography section.
I'm cold.

the only problem i have is why is a pointless thread like this allowed to be posted...and the amount of bamaster's posts are also a problem...taking up space on a server that could be better served to handle actual photography issues. why not just have the official bamaster thread, and that would silence people like me who don't like seeing crap on the website and it would also be a thread people that thought that that sort of stuff is funny could go to and get dome comic relief

you can't expect to say dumb things publicly and not get public responses on those dumb things

My only comment would be to include a smiley when making jokes on these messages boards. You are dealing with people from different cultures, with different grasps of the english language and sometimes it can be very difficult to tell a joke from a serious comment without any visual clues.
Having said that I don't see why DPChallenge should support a single user in such a way (ie: own discussion group, etc). Bamaster - if you're this keen why not create your own site? I'm sure we'll all visit it frequently... I think most people's opinion so far hasn't been "I don't like what you say" as much as "perhaps this is too much for a photography site".
Personally I say stick around and keep posting - just keep it in the right place. |

Well, I very often use smilies and more often use "hehe" to let people know I'm joking, not to mention my sig says not to take me seriously.
And please don't think I was serious at asking for my own Forum, that's just silly. It was a sarcastic way at bringing about the point I've been repeating so many friggin times it's ridiculous. Excuse the caps, I'm not yelling, but uh... WHAT IS WRONG WITH PUTTING OFF TOPIC THREADS IN THE GENERAL DISCUSSION FORUM?
Go Houston Aeros!

Coming from Australia I don't care that much for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but since you use a CP995, like myself, I say why not!
Also - someone mentioned a Hockey challenge - yes that would be tough for Aussies (and many other nationalities) but probably not impossible. We just play our hockey on grass instead of ice. :-( |

I think the `General Discusson` thread should be for photographic topics. However `Rant` is perhaps not the best title for a thread that turns into a "catch-all". I think we need a "Goof" thread, a chalkboard where we can all just play (and lighten up) when we need to get away from it all... :) (smiley face included and free!)

Question... what are the differences between the Photography Discussion Forum and the General Discussion Forum?

Okay, thanks to the Australians for their consideration for the Maple Leaf Forum. But I don't think this idea will come to pass.

Hey Tony, I found the appropriate places for you to post 'off-topic' stuff:
here, here, and here
good luck, let me know how it goes. |

Tony,
Why not just put them in rant? I like most of the off topic, off the wall threads you start, but honestly, I wish you'd just let the hockey folks hijack this one and get it over with...
Remember your signature "If I don't take myself seriously, should you?"... You seem to be taking this a bit more seriously then it deserves.
But I DO kind of like the idea of a "Bamaster Irrelevant Thread Challenge"... I'm sure that's what you were suggesting when you started this here :) Choose your favorite "Bamaster Irrelevant or Irreverent Thread" and take a photo depicting it. Be creative and have fun :)

Originally posted by bamaster: Well, John Setzler, your opinion of my comments/jokes means nothing to me. If you are in a position to warn me about something (I guess you're speaking for the Site Council) then you should do so in private messages and not in a public forum. I have yet to hear of some official ruling that non-photography postings must be in Rants and not General Discussion. Until then, I'll post wherever I feel my post is appropriate.
Now how did this topic go astray? |
I believe John's warning was about the personal attacks in this thread.

If a warning is intended for just you, you will receive it by private message. As I read it, this warning was intended as a general reminder to several participants of the thread that personal attacks are inappropriate. Such messages are generally posted publically to avoid the thread degenerating further.

Consider it done; this thread is getting pretty personal at times anyway and has ceased to have any particular value.
bamaster, you might consider starting a single "bamaster's jokes" thread in either GD or in Rants, and appending to that whenever you want to post your jokes and stuff. Personally I enjoy most of the stuff you post, but it does irk me that whenever you post 5 threads in an hour it knocks 5 on-topic threads off my most recent threads screen. Using a single thread would allow those of us who wish to read your humor to do so while minimizing the inconvenience of those who wish to pass it over.
Thanks,
Terry
