Bear in mind that most of the people with huge numbers of ribbons have been here a long time; in the beginning the challenges were much smaller and the talent pool wasn't as deep. It's a LOT harder to win ribbons now.

Heida, however, continues to maintain an extremely high "batting average": she has entered 18 challenges in 2005 and taken 8 ribbons in 13 top-10 finishes. JJ enters quite a few challenges and has 5 top-10's since his last ribbon in February 2005.

That too :-) I hope it didn't sound like I was dissing JJ, 'cuz I sure didn't mean to do that. On the other hand, I was definitely giving props to Heida, whose "average" is pretty stunning :-)

Just for the record, I have entered 83 challenges (1 less than Heida), have an average score of 1.1 less than Heida, have 20 less ribbons than Heida, and about 101,000 less profile views than Heida... just for the record:)

kiwiness has earned 17 ribbons in only 59 challenges. And he carries a 6.7763 Avg Votes Received.

When I started here he was knocking down ribbons right and left, and it was normal to see two of his shots among the winners on the front page. He stopped entering quite so often, and resigned from Site Council, saying he was tired of shooting the kind of formulaic shots it takes to win challenges. I didn't understand that at the time but I think that was his polite way of saying that winning ribbons was no longer a challenge to him, that he was bored with it, and that there were a lot of other things he would rather do with his camera and his talants. Nowadays he just travels the world taking pictures of beautiful women.

When he frequented these forums he was always friendly, approachable, and helpful to the less experienced. He would make lots of comments and they were genuinely helpful. He wrote tutorials for the site and was never secretive about his techniques. He is a master of photo editing but refrains from using it to extremes. He's able to shoot any kind of photography well, but perhaps portraits are his preference.

Any discussion here at dpc that uses stats to compare photographer's abilities must include kiwiness on the shortest of short lists. But I am sure Gary would join me in thinking that these numbers are a poor measure of true talent.

It was hard for me to understand at that time because I was still pretty new here. I was still putting fairly high values on things like having a mess of ribbons on my profile page and being on Site Council. I think's that's where the OP is now. However, after being here for some time I have been able to put my values into better order. ;)

His work is fantastic. There's a sense of life in his photos that's missing in a lot of the challenge winners don't with their contrived setups. Obviously there's a place for everything but to me this is what photography is really about. Anyway, just my amateurish .02 cents.
