How do you vote when you really don't see what the picture has to do with the contest theme, but you think it's an excellent photograph?

ha ha I know what you mean ... the rating system has an absolute scale but you don't know what the criteria is to vote on .. I usually take off about 3 to 5 points depending on how much it deviates from the contest

Try to keep the theme in mind while voting. It is up to you how much you deduct. Remember there could be several interpretations of the theme.

I deduct 9 points for those that don't meet the challenge in a Free Study! But then I'm hardcore. ;-)

I don't have a fixed scale, but if it is off theme (or appears so to me) I would never give it more than a seven. Sometimes you get a picture you really like and you want it to fit the category and submit it anyways. Some categories are more open to interpretation. I try to give a nudge to pictures that attempt something different- trying to avoid the obvious subjects that fit a category. My submission to "ODD" had a lone figure in it and a couple of people left comments that they did not see what was "odd" about it. A similar (and better) picture to mine had three figures and got a ribbon. Generally I am honest enough to myself about which comments are meaningful and which are not.

How about a picture that there's not anything technically wrong, but something about it just pisses you off?

This would probably be an excellent image to comment on. It might help you decide a number as you are typing.
