since buying and using the battery grip, ( twice now on two different shoots ) i have been running out of battery on both batteries... before i had the battery grip, my battery had never run out.. i did a shoot the week before buying the grip, was there 6 hours, and took about 500 photos ( and used flash all night ) , i did a small shoot the other day was only there bout 1 hour and 270 photos later the battery dies... had both batteries in the grip....i just photographed a Musical Production tonight, and only took about 300 shots and the battery goes again... and no, i didn't use flash..anyone got any ideas??... if this is a problem with draining so quickly, the grip is for sale, as i won't use it again..
cheers everyone...

p.s luckily i have three batteries, i didnt' miss any of the show.. ( which would of been disaterious as it was the final night, i shot three different nights and tonight they had the whole production and cast on stage, so this final photo was the major thing...) < bits fingernails >

The older 20DE battery grips used to have some sort of connection issue with the camera's power socket, but I'm not sure that if affected the longevity of the batteries.

thanks denis... good reading there, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to apply to mine, my serial number starts with 12 so it must be a new one, and i also have the gold trimmings... i also dont' think i got that message on the camera either, as it just went dead, nothing.. so i changed , took the batteries out of the grip, put the new one in, and still nothing, so i took the grip off, and wolllah... it was perfect...

I would still talk to Canon on this... you should of course be getting much longer life with the grip than without it, and the fact that you got nothing upon inserting new batteries in the grip, but were OK when using one of those in the cam directly, points right at the grip as the problem.

I haven't had this problem with mine. I generally get anywhere between 400 and 600 photos before battery changes in my grip. I can run two batteries for a week sometimes. I do conserve my battery power by turning off the LCD so it doesn't display a preview after every shot I make. If I want to browse the photos on the LCD, i have to press the review button to make them come up.

According to my readings the 20D without grip can get around 1000 non flash photos on a single battery. I dont know how accurate this is, but wouldnt suprise me. I take more then 600 photos on a battery.

Ive heard (also dont know how accurate this is) that the BG-E2 has to use the BP511A/BP514 not the BP511/BP512

Please correct me if im wrong.

I use the 511's in mine with no trouble.

thanks kirbic, exactly what i think ill do... it just shouldn't happen like this, like henry buckle said , on a single battery i can get up to 500-600 photos with one battery..

p.s sorry bout the spelling on issues... there's a show in australia where it's become legendary the way issues is said and spelt.. must keep remembering not every body knows this...

thanks everyone, i will just ring canon and get it sorted out...

Hi-ho,

If your 20D is an ealier one you may have this issue even with the new grip...

I returned my grip to Canon for service under the warranty notice on their website, and the shop I used sent them details of my camera as well (Serial # and purchase date).

Canon service asked for the camera as well, and replaced something in the camera.

The service notice/report for the camera says
Replace MD Flex for EOS20D : CY3-1507-000'

My grip is the older serial number range (That's why I took it in) and the camera serial # is 0430116408, purchased November '04 not long after they arrived in NZ. I got the third one the shop had seen.

Hope this helps....

Cheers, Me.

I had the same issue with my 20D and grip, but I bought mine from B&H and had it shipped to Iceland, even though this is a warranty issue I didn't feel like shipping my camera back to B&H for the repair, so I just traded it in for a new 5D at the local Canon dealer. got $1200 for it a year old :)

I have the 20D and grip. I have had no problems with it until last week. I was out on a hike. I had taken several shots and continued hiking. I go to turn the camera on and nothing. I look at the camera and the battery icon is flashing. I turn it off and back on, nothing. so I removed the batteries from the grip and removed the grip from the camera. I put it all back together and its worked great since. Maybe it got shook lose or someting during my hikes.
