I braved the Wal-Mart crowd and have lived to tell about it. I got there at 4:00am, and was 5th in line for a pool table for the boys. The laptop line was around the store already, and the MP3 player line was close behind. It was rather insane. Oh well, I got everything I went for without too much trauma and was home by 5:30am.

Any other Black Friday shoppers out there?

edit: I also found out that if you put your contact in inside out, it is not comfortable at all. Waking up at 3:30am will teach you those kinds of things. :)

I'm prepping for what promises to be a long day of, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE OUT!!!?? I WANT TO SPEAK TO YOUR MANAGER!"

:)

I love Black Friday. Really. No, honest I do. :)

I am planning on avoiding the joys of Black Friday shopping.

Perhaps I'll take a little trip to Marquette, camera in tow, park in the Wal-Mart parking lot, and photograph people as they enter and exit - the quintessential "Before and After".

I don't think I could brave the crowds - you're a much better woman than I am Laurie :)

Being from the UK I don't know about Black Friday Shopping so did a search on Google and cam up with a report from CBS, they suggested to have a look on Cairo to help save time in finding the latest and cheapest prices for products.
Hope this helps out all you eager beavers looking for a bargin in the states.

I was out there...Staples.
Got a maxtor 200Gb HD for $30
Got a sandisk 512Mb CF card for $15
I missed the $20 DVD-ram drive, so i splurged and got the Sony Dual Layer one for $69.
With these and a few other tidbits, i have $135 or so coming back in rebates!

GOt ther at 5:40, stood outside for 20 minutes in 12 degree F cold. yes, twelve. Finally checked out at 7:30.

Guy in front of me missed the Walmart laptop by 6 people, but got one at staples. guy behind me missed the laptop both places. guy behind him got one at walmart.

When Mike and I woke up this morning, I said "Just think, some people have already been shopping over an hour." Laurie - I wasn't thinking specifically of you either. ha ha ha

I'll be out and about today. I never shop on the Friday following Thanksgiving, but after reading all the ads yesterday, I'm ready to fight the madness. I had plenty of carbs yesterday for that energy boost.

Just remember, all those limited time/limited number things are GONE. At staples they had little tickets for each item and handed them out to thos in line. EVERYTHING was gone before the doors even opened!

I forgot to mention in my sleep-deprived state the tidbit of info that included the story of getting the pool table I purchased HOME. Those of you who know me know that I have a little black convertible...which made for a bit of a challenge. ;) The conversation with the guys at the loading truck at Wal-Mart went something like this:

"Excuse me, sir...here is my receipt; I'd like the 6ft. pool table."

"Where are you going to put it?"

"In this car."

"You don't know anyone with a truck?"

"No sir, I don't. I need the pool table in this car, please."

(laughter amongst the three men there) "Lady, you have to be kidding me."

"No, sir...I'm not kidding. I live 1 mile from here, it's not like I'm driving to Dallas with it in my back seat."

"You want us to put THAT pool table in THIS car...really?"

"Yes sir."

"Are you sure you don't know anyone with a truck???"

"NO, I don't. I want it in the back seat."

(more laughter) "OK, lady...whatever you say."

It was a cold ride home, with a 6ft. pool table sticking out of the back seat of the car, top down, with the world looking at me like I was insane. I guess maybe that's true, but it's home now, ready for Santa to assemble. ;)

I seem to remember a Wal-Mart commercial from a couple of years ago where a Wal-Mart employee was given many accolades for using his truck to drive large items to a customer's house, customer service and all :) Obviously these fellas missed that training episode.

Any shots of the pool table sticking out of the car??

I'm visiting my family in Northwest PA... my dad got up at 4-something this morning to get to the Punxsutawney Wal-Mart so he could buy a portable DVD player for $69, which he was able to get.

I'm in St. Marys (an hour north of Punxsutawney) now, and my wife and I headed to the Wal-Mart up here out of boredom, and saw those same DVD players stacked up in a pile of at least 100 (this was at 7:00 tonight). Not sure if I should tell my dad he didn't have to get up at the crack of dawn after all :)

I had to go to CompUSA. My laptop decided it would run on battery only last night. Fought the CompUSA crowds to get a new power adaptor, picked up 2 PSP units while I was there and dashed back home only to find the PMU in my laptop is going bad *sigh*. I'm backing up my hard drive to this pc (so I can get my pics) and will be back out to CompUSA to drop my baby off for repair (full warranty *whew*). Thankfully I'm friends with the guys that work there and they brought me to the front of the line :)

I tried. After speaking with my husband last night, we decided to get up when the kids did and head out for breakfast and a short trip to Best Buy to pick up a 1gb CF card. That was it... No big deal, right?

Kids got up at 7:30 and we (the kids and I) were dressed and ready by 8:00, needless to say we didn't leave the house until 9:00am. My husband is not the quickest to get up on his days off. So off to Waffle House for a "quick" breakfast. We arrive to a loaded parking lot and we sit and we wait, and wait, and wait some more. Seems we were passed over. Finally seated, we order and we wait and wait and wait... our order was passed over. So it's about 10:30am and we head to Best Buy, pick up CF card then just happen to wander past the Xbox games. Lost husband.... stroll around store with double stroller and a bajillion people, most of them Best Buy empolyees. Found husband and his 3 Xbox games. Head to line, husband says he'll be right back... get to register, no husband. Comes running up a last minute, puts back Xbox games and gets computer a game instead. And people say women are the indecisive ones.

By putting back Xbox games he dissapoints 3 year old son because we no longer have Darth Vader.... Ugh. That's ok sweetie, we'll just run by Toys-r-us and pick you up your own Darth Vader. Of course it's packed. We head inside and guess what, NO DARTH VADERS!!! Apparently, they are a bit of a collectors item. Whatever.... stroll around store trying to find something else that will catch his attention. Finally, a loud, noisy, flashing monster truck does the trick. Off to the lines.... Ugh!! People with carts and carts of stuff overflowing with bikes and playhouses and toys. Insane!!! And us with our one little $10 truck. So we wait, and wait and wait some more. Back in the car, it's now 1:30pm, with our CF card, computer game and truck and my husband and I swearing to ourselves... NEVER AGAIN!!!

Great story Laurie!!! I can picture the whole conversation. :-) Wal Mart must be the place to go. My sister, who lives in California, called and said she was in line at 3:00am with about 100 other folks to wait for the store to open at 5:00am. CRAZY!!!!

I showed up at kohls at 10:30am and got 3 picture frames and some dolche & gabbana cologne :-D

Was rather painless by that time.

I cant believe I woke up as early as I did. Me and my mom decided to make an attempt at circuit city at 7:30. pretty successful. Dvd burner, new computer speakers, and a 512 CF for 10 bucks. was it worth the loss of sleep? id have to say yes.

Circuit City had a huge line because a Toshiba laptop was $199 after rebates and AOL signup.

Local Walmart had problems with crowds probably because of their laptop deal.

I had a great Black Friday (that name is so appropriate) I went for a 3hr long mountain bike ride in the pouring down rain with some friends. I was drenched, cold and more than a little tired, but very satisfied. After the ride we went and chowed on Sushi. Talk about a perfect day. The only thing that would have made it better would have been my camera, but it was to wet for that.
All in all a perfect day :-)

You know, it just hit me. I had thought the name was a tongue-in-cheek homage to how brutal the shopping could be, but is it really called Black Friday because it is the date which is most important to shops being "in the black" rather than "in the red"?

Sorry if I'm the last to get it...

Yup. Previously working in retail, we call it Green Friday. You can probably guess why.
