On the weekend I visited Toronto with some friends to go to an arts college open house. After we had some time to walk around, shop and take pictures. When I talked to the homeless people you see in the pictures, they were some of the nicest people I met in Toronto that day. There are more stories underneath the pictures in the comments.
I also got a few pictures here and there of a friend who was with me.
Any feedback would be appreciated! |

Nice photos. I love shooting on the street since there's just so much to see there.
How do you get the edges and corners so dark though? It looks nice but I'm wondering how you did it? |

You can use the burn tool to darken the edges. I like using this effect bceause it really brings you into the picture.
Here's a sweet tutorial on dodging and burning by Pedro. |

Thanks for that Joey.
Now all I have to do is work out how to do that stuff in Gimp. |

Those are really cool.
I like 'Strong' and 'Kristi' (the wider angle one) best. |

I was thinking about these photos of Joey's on the way to work this morning. Money's tight with buying a new house & having a shopaholic wife, so I've been trying to think up side-line money-making scheme's.
A while back I was thinking it would be an interesting project to make a coffee table book of street people photos & their story, if any, in captions.
I wonder what the costs would be...
1. To hire Joey to take photos (& gather stories - a few sentences for captions, which could be re-penned).
2. To buy the rights to Joey's photos.
3. To market the product to a publisher.
I have to do some actual work today, and finish up another scheme I started. Maybe I'll have some time to look into the publishing biz.
It might be a good gamble. I don't know how many books like this have been done, but probably not with Joey's style. Maybe Joey isn't even interested, which is OK. But I'm still curious about the publishing biz. Anybody here have any experience?
edit -- just kicking ideas around in my head. :-)

I'm a publisher, though we've never published any photography. It's very expensive to do it right. It would be an interesting project. I don't know how much of a market there is for it though.

All from Toronto as well. Though the first two guys aren't homeless.

I think my preference would be to make a few nicely-bound copies and market them to a large publishers. Then the publisher can take care of printing millions of copies and distribute them to all the bookstores.

He lives somewhere near Bay and Bloor. i see him everytime I'm there. He's a little crusty at first, but really friendly once he decides to be :) |

well not exactly a money maker :) .. well for some it is.
It many european cities, (and now recently oslo) there is a magazine put out each month, with a variety of photography showcasing the city, it's homeless people and their stories. The street people purcahse the magazine from the publisher for the equivalent of $2.00, and then sell the magazine for $4.00. I believe all the work done for the magazine is volunteer.

I was thinking more along the lines of a major publisher putting copies in all the big outlets... Chapters, Coles, etc.

I could see this as a project where some of the profits are donated to help the homeless.

The project sounds like a pretty rad idea if it happens. I think right now the best I can do is keep building some pictures of these guys and gals. I'd like to visit Chinatown in Toronto, that would be cool |
