Complaining about it will not force the masses to change their ways! Just accept what you get. I'm comfortable with the fact that the scores my photos get and the comments I receive is what they deserve. If my photos were better then they would score better. But, there will always be those people that don't like them and score them low as there is with most people. That is life. You can not please everybody. If you were a politician and you lost an election would you jump up and down at the people asking why they didn't vote for you? You accept it and move on! |

So when you get positive one word comments and a super low score...does that tell you anything on your shot...like how to improve it, etc, etc... |
For me, yes, most definitely. It tells me that technically, I havn't committed any major errors. My focus is ok, lighting, composition, etc. are ok. Not good enough to stand out, but definitely not bad enough to stand out either. It tells me that at least some voters it effected enough to give out (depending on the voter) probably a 5, 6, or 7. I can take it that not all voters comment, and not all commenters comment on everything, so these few comments are representative of much more than just the few that are there. So if all voters had commented, a large number would more than likely be close to that same line of thought.
So, no blatant errors being pointed out, and still a mediocre score? So technically, I must be at least close to doing something right, so why the score? Obvious to me, I'm doing the tech stuff ok, but I need to practice and do it even better! Instead of a good composition, I need to make it good enough so people say instead of "cool shot", they say "cool shot, I love your composition, great use of leading lines and color, and your subject just really stands out and grabs my attention" . I know from the score that I need to build on what I've got and make the shot stand out. Maybe by my choice of subject, and honing of skills and just plain overall presentation.
So that's what it all tells me. I think we just need to take the data we have and think on it and glean the info that we need, that is there, IMO, and go with it. I wish we were lucky enough that everyone could just hit us over the head with it blatantly, but that's not how things go :-)

I've said it before, I'll say it again, to me, there is NO such thing as a bad comment :-)
I received a comment on a current challenge and all the person wrote was "yuck". (of course they have a bag over their head to boot) I would consider this a bad comment. It's fine if you don't like my photo but please give me a little insight as to why or don’t say anything at all if you’re going to be cruel. What ever happened to constructive criticism? |

If you are "vote watching" be careful not to assume a comment and a new score you receive are from the same person. Many people, like me, vote and comment at different times. I know in the past, from posting this, that some people have made this association incorrectly.
Personally, if I really like somone's photo enough to give them a 7 or higher, the odds are I won't nitpick it, unless there's some idea I happen to think they should try.
But time being what it is these days, I've been voting, commenting and participating less anyway. :(

No kidding. I was about to make a similar remark. Wildly inappropriate post IMO, calling someone out for a PM in public. Oh well...

Had the PM link worked from my email, I would have replied to you there. My vote will not change, and feel privledged that I don't lower it one more notch just for attitude problems.

Ah, here we go again. Rose, you may not mean to, but you sound mean and petty. If you are having a PM link issue, the appropriate place to hash it out is requesting help privately from the admins rather than in public.
As far as lowering votes for attitude problems, you might consider the anonymous feature in our voting system to be in your favor.
Edit: grammar

Hmmm I thought you were done with the whole DPC thing and were going to go play with your cats or at least stay under your bridge.
Please do reconsider.

It is neither petty nor mean to point out a hypocritical remark - one poster who claims one thing in public and acts differently in private. Just making the posters aware here that this person's posts really mean little compared to actions.
It is not my policy or style to vote lower due to attitude in PM's. That is why I said for them to feel privledged I do not.
I have already questioned why the PM links don't work. I am told that this site really has nothing to do with the PM's, and they can't be accessed other than in email. When I tried to fix the problem via their advice, it worked, but only for the one time.
In any case, I am through now. I don't really like posting in these forums and have vowed not to again. I came simply due to the PM problems and to point out this particular contridicting statement (and there are more than one on this thread) by this poster.
Good day, and I wish you all the best in your challenges.
Rose

I think the honesty lies in the vote.
Just like people vote with their pocketbooks, around here people comment with their votes :-D
Since this is Thanksgiving I'll use a Thanksgiving analogy. Your relatives may SAY they like your walnut and marshmellow dressing..but VERY LITTLE OF IT gets on their plate....hmmmm...Me thinks that says more than anything. >:-/ |

Just remember that those giving those one word positive comments are not the ones giving you the low votes - so they are not likely to be the ones to tell you how to improve your image - they already like it.
What you are looking for is just to get comments from those who give the low scores.
What I would prefer is comments from those who give out the middle of the road scores. Someone who gives me a 5 generally represets a lot more votes than those who gave me the 2 so I am much more interested in what that voter has in the way of advice. |
