This past Saturday, I FINNALY went to see my first NHL game!! Can you believe it?? Sens V.S Devils!!! Anyway, I̢۪m a huge Hockey fan and this was a huge deal to me, so, I decided to take the risk, and bring my camera. My Uncle, being the photographer he is, also took his (slightly better, lol) Digital Rebel XT. Ok, so it̢۪s a great game, by second period I̢۪ve used my first 512 card, well into my second set of batteries and well on the nerves of the people in front of me, lol. Then it happened. One of the Big guys (you know, suit, tie, the works, lol) came down and told my uncle, who was sitting rite beside me, that absolutely no photography was prohibited. To tell you the truth, I was kind of upset that me and my little S1 didn̢۪t get told too, lol. So I managed to continue shooting until I got reported. I was pretty happy with some of the photos because everyone knows how difficult it is too shoot in an arena, so here are some off the first card that i thought turned out ok

(I think you mean no photography allowed ;) )
I'm amazed at the quality you did get specially in the stands, I had the chance to shoot my nephew playing indoor roller hockey a couple weekends ago and I really had a hard time getting the non blurred shots and I was free to walk around the rink side. My ISO will only go to 800 so I had everything wide open. I did get some good shots but the glass around didn't help any either. I got one that I thought would be really good of a kid after he made the goal as he skated off he had his arms in the air like he just won the Stanley and I took the shot, only to have a messed up piece of the glass cover his entire head. Very upsetting.
Nice job.

I've only taken old-fashioned video tapes in ice rinks. The lighting is tough for my little handy-cam, as the ice & boards are white & the players are dark. So congrats on the good shots.
Don Cherry is favouring the Sens to win the cup this year, pretty exciting for Ottawa. Of course Ottawa didn't get an NHL team until I finished school & moved away. >:-(
But.... GO LEAFS!

Thats interesting to hear... that NO photography is allowed. I've been to a number of St. Louis Blues games and the rule in that arena is no lenses longer than 3". Although... that never stopped me from sneaking a bigger one in in the sleeve of my coat. Amazing what we'll do to get closer to the action. Now this year I will be going to a game in CO at the Pepsi Center and according to thier website, as long as the camera and lens isn't obstrucking another patron, it doesnt matter what size it is. This is from thier website:
"Am I allowed to bring a camera inside Pepsi Center?
- For sporting events, professional and non-professional cameras are allowed into the facility. Lenses are permitted as long as they are not obstructing another patron̢۪s view. Flash photography is not permitted during game play. Camera bags must fit under seats. "

Well if you read on the corel center, suprisingly they have nothing (that i could find) on rules concerning cameras. But as the Guy told Us no photography, you look down and see about 500 flashes going off. I've heard because it's concidered a "trademark" and "copywrited" that they are affraid of loss of revinue? I mean, the games live! but still, like i said, he seemed to be targeting patrons with the larger SLR's but I got told by two different officers... Maybe the Corel center is just strict about their rules pecause it's in the capital? i don't really know... but it's not like they'd kick you out... they don't even kick you out if your in the wrong seats, lol

Last year I tried to take my old 35mm with a 200mm lens on it to a Tampa Bay Lightning game and was advised no "professional" looking equipment was allowed! Had to leave it with security vs. hiking back to my car. I was totally bummed out. Hoping I can take my poor little Fuji into a game this year.
And yes, I love the Lightning! But my heart belongs to the Red Wings!!

I go to my local hockey rink most weekends and always take my camers. It's only a compact and the officials there know that I take photos but since I don't try to sell them they're okay with it.
One thing I have found is that without a pro camera I'm really stuck when it comes to action shots so I tend to go for some dramatic portraits instead.
Again, the lighting is awful so I convert everything to B&W but this is the sort of thing I manage to get.
Hockey Photos
There's some semblance of action in some of the shots but by and large my camera can't cope with the speed. So I improvise.
I'm also very fortunate in that the local rink only seats about 2000 people so getting a front row seat on the blue line is really easy. |
