Hello,
I've only owned digital SLRs, so I have a question about "Point and Shoot" cameras. I have a friend that is looking to just get into digital, and one of her major requirements is no "lag" between the time she pushes the shutter button, and the time the camera actually takes the picture. I know from people I've been standing next to when they take digital pics with P&S's that I've seen/heard that happen many times. So, my question is, are there any P&S cameras that respond FAST in that arena, like a dSLR? If so, could you let me know the manufacturer and model so I can pass that on to her? Thanks a million!

Take my model off the list.

Bummer...I'm hoping to steer her toward Canon if she can get a good one...Just to "keep her in the family" ha ha ha ha.

But thanks for the info!

They all have a little lag so the camera can auto-focus. I would recommend and canon G series or the powershot pro1.

The Sony V3 is known for it's quick shutter response, and I can attest that it has very little lag.

Good luck in your quest, grasshopper, as it will be an amlost impossible feat to find a peashooter without shutter lag. Some are a tad bit faster responding than others. I put up with it as long as I possibly could and finally gave in.

My advice...

...Don't let your friend shoot your 20D and maybe they won't notice the Lag of the P&Sers.

Hmmm, interesting. I was just looking at the Powershot Pro1 on dpreview. I can't find a catagory in his specifications page that would list something like "shutter lag" or whatever you call it. Am I missing it, or is that info just not typically given?

Thanks for the input!

Ah! I found that info on the "timings" page. Beautiful, JUST what she is looking for. At least for the Powershot Pro1. I'll look to see if that info is on all the reviews. It'll give her something to compare...

Make sure to check that it has the updated firmware as it cuts the s/l as much as 50%...

I have the Pro1 and shoot it everyonce in a while for crystal clear out of cam shots... I also have and leave the x1.5 Teleconverter on the body.

Thanks for that info on the Pro1. I saw the price on dpreview and it was like $999 or something close... For that much she could get a Rebel XT, right? Any idea how the shutter lag compares between the XT and the Pro1? Pro1 just as fast? Or not? Thanks.

I can see you really like the Pro1, but if shutter speed is her major requirement the Sony V3 is faster than the Pro1.

V3 Shutter Lag Table

Whatever you choose, good luck!

I'm not sure of the specs but if the money difference between pro1 and the XT is npot a big deal (don't forget she will need some lenses) then go the XT root. If your familiar with the canon product and like it then recommend canon. Support them by recommending them.

By no means am I suggesting the sony is a bad camera just that I don't know the specs on it and I recommend canon to virtually everybody until I saw the d200 nikon. damn now thats a camera (bang for the buck).

Thanks! I'll let her know.

I just pointed her to the "timings" pages on dpreview.

You can also cut the lag time down my using manual focus and settings (of course your lighting has to be pretty constant to use this) so you would maybe want to consider something that will allow that if you can't find a fast enough shutter.

My wife really wants this camera and I've actually considered it because of it's manual focus ring instead of having to hold a damn button like on mine and that 12x optical zoom is nice too.

Thanks everyone! I just talked to her, and she wants to go SLR! Cool. So now her options are wide open...

Thanks for all the input!
