Hi!
I'm choosing glass over backs right now, and am leaning strongly towards the Rebel XT (especially seeing what you all do with yours...dang!) This will be a SLR learning camera for me when I get one, and I know I'll want to bypass the kit lens for two different ones. My concern is that if you use lenses larger than the kit lens, does the fitting feel secure? Does it sag? Is the camera strong enough to take beefier lenses? And then in general, would you buy your camera again or would you choose something different?
Thanks much,
Jeannel |

We have two 300Ds and they don't "sag" I don't even know what that means in terms of a lens! lol

certain lenses may fit looser than others on any of the canon cameras. I wouldn't put a lens bigger than the the 70-200/4L on the xt and only hold the camera body so it's out. It should be fine with that lens, but i wouldn't trust anything much over 2 pounds. If it just hangs downward that's a different story, but holding lenses out can create a lot of torque on the mount. And while the mount is metal, and the frame is metal, the body is still plastic and it might break. With that said i've only heard of a few xts getting ripped apart by a lens. And they were lenses that weighed over 3 pounds. If you have the xt hang from the lens instead of the lens from the xt, you won't have problems.

I meant, is the body strong enough to keep a really big one up? (LENS, guys!) : ) |

...and that's what I needed to hear, I think! I can certainly work around that, and I can't afford any three-pound lenses at this time anyway. Thanks, Kyebosh! |

Well, what kind of crappy shooting position would you be in if you held JUST the body with a 5 pound lens on any camera? Use a tripod, use a monopod or heck, put your hand under it. lol
I think it's strong enough yes. We put the 70-200 2.8 L IS on it and it hasn't broken yet.

I have a 50 - 500 mm Bigma
It's almost 4 lbs. and I don't worry about he camera being attached, but also The bigger the lens the more you will tend to support the lens and let the camera be. I also ran a 28-300 on my 300 D for well over a year and then on my XT and there is no problem. The way it was explained to me is that the body is a covering and their is a metal frame as all cameras have, just covered in plastic, not metal, but then maybe I was lied to, but again I run large heavy lenses and things are fine. You don't get large lenses being supported by the camera strap and hung around your neck. They support the lens and the camera is just supporting it's own weight

Think you are making a good choice.
Love mine, have some hefty lenses (Canon 80-200 2.8 similiar to the Canon 70-200 2.8) and no problems!
Enjoy! |

I read the title and immediately saw a psychiatrists office with a small Canon lens laying back on the couch saying, in a Woody Allen voice, "I don't know doctor. I just don't feel like I measure up -- I mean, look at the telephotos, they can see anything. What chance does a lens like me have?"

I use the Sigma 135-400 on my 300D and it feels fine. You tend to hold the lens for support, but I don't think it is necessary to do so. On a tripod, the 135-400 has a tripod mount so the lens is fitted to the tripod, not the camera.

I don't have one personally, but i have alot of use of a "stock" Xt, and i have had No problems... you've got to get use to the weight, but thats nothing!

I have the 350XT and did have the 70-200mm f/4 and it did not sag and was very stable. The only problem (for me) was it shifted the center of gravity forward because the lens weighed about 3 lbs. causing camera shake when shooting handheld. If you have a very stable hand it may not be a problem for you. The body of the 350XT/D is smaller than the 300 or 20D and the weight of lens makes more of a difference. |

I recently tried my Sigma 50-500 which weighs about 5lbs on the XT with a grip and it felt pretty solid. |

With the 50-500 lens, hand held, I have one hand on the camera and one hand on the lens to support it. When using the lens with a tripod, I attach the lens, not the camera, to the tripod. |
