I've been taking these photos on my recent trips into Cardiff, I'm photographing the street entertainers and some of the hawkers and hoping to build something out of it at the end, maybe a gallery or a website or whatever.

I'd really like some feedback on what I've got so far and how I might improve upon it. Thanks.

These are very intriguing shots! Hope you have signed model releases!

'Buskers' is my fav.

You should crop out the 'Burger King' sign in 'hawker', it's distracting.

I didn't realise you needed model release forms for journalism-style shots? - I thought it was only when you were using the shots for commercial purposes you needed release forms?

Very nice images. Street is my favorite stuff over all. I could look at people all day....keep'em coming.

Model releases? Not necessary unless you're selling. I wish I had model releases on a few of mine...just in case there was some interest.

Small gallery so far but what you have seems good. My favorite is street guy drumming.

I am really glad that you said that since I took the photo and then just didn't know what to do with it. I tried different types of highlighting and various crops until I finally found that one and I quite like it too, I can't say I love it but I'm reasonably happy with the result.

Thanks for all the feedback. If anyone else wants to leave a comment could they please mention something about the cropping, am I cropping too tight because I think that I might be but I find this focuses on the personality present more than the situation.
Also there's the grain issue, I've not been inserting any grain to the pieces and I'm not sure if that would give it a more 'street' feel or a more 'forced' feel.

Thanks for everything you've all said so far.

IMHO, the "cropping" question has to be asked and answered on a shot-by-shot basis. There is a fine line between emphasizing a subject and removing so much of the contextual elements that the actual subject tends to lose something. For example, in "Hawker", I agree with jhonan - in the current crop, the BK sign is more of a distraction. However, if the shot were opened up a little - to show just a bit more of the surroundings (bulidings, passersby), I think the impact of the gentleman standing on a streetcorner selling monkey puppets would be enhanced. Unless, of course, there were other people selling monkey puppets nearby and you didn't want to take the focus off this particular hawker.

In "Street Guy Drumming", you nailed it! This is an EXCELLENT photograph. The expression on the face of the gentleman in the light coat is priceless. This adds so much that, were he cropped out, the overall picture would lose tremendously even though it would still be interesting.

Now, looking at "Cowboy", the fact that the subject IS isolated from the surroundings is, I feel, what really makes it work since there is an air of "mystery" created by this. WHAT or WHO is he looking at so intensely? What are the other people in the area doing? Watching/listening/enjoying or just walking by and ignoring the man? In this shot, he is in his own little world and his being the only focus of the shot draws the viewer into that world (or, at least, their imaginary version of what that world might be).

I really like "Buskers", too. I think the cropping on that is very good. Could be maybe just a LITTLE wider, especially if there are any people watching and if the expression on their face(s) is visible.

Graining - a tiny bit - would, IMO, add a bit of the grit you seem to be after if you're trying to replicate the look of film shots of this type. Again, that's a call you have to make on a shot-by-shot basis, since sometimes grainless razor-sharpness makes a shot. It depends, too, on the intended purpose for the picture - newspaper or hardcover coffeee table book?

Speaking of intended purpose, my comment above, about model releases, was made on the assumption you intended to sell the photographs. As at least one other commenter has stated, you don't need a release if the photograph wil be used for personal or editorial purposes. The release comes in if you are selling the picture.

You're on the right track! I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Pig's Head and Cowboy. Love'em! You're getting some neat b&w tones, but seem to be on the border for grain. I'd like to see the grain enhanced just a bit for the ones where that's the effect. The pig's head shot works well polished, IMO.
Thanks for sharing your pix!

Not unless you're selling under certain conditions.
