You're the type that needs to keep a notebook and a pencil next to your bed.

My ideas just pop into my head like lightning. Unfortunately, it's been very 'dim' lightning the past several months...but I won't give up hope! ;)

I read a description of a challenge and a process starts deep inside under consciousness layer, and here outside I also actively search for idea. When I think I found it, I ask myself: shall it be interesting to others? If yes, I go to make it. When it's done, I stare at the photo and look for a short, interesting and descriptive title. And then submit. I like my photos most just before submitting. After submission my internal critique appears and asks: "Do you really think it's really good? Think again and go practice". And I go :)

I brainstorm intensely (they would probably show up on Doppler Radar). I think that's my strength. I start with whatever obviously meets the challenge, then try to figure out how to make it unique and interesting. Not every good idea is something you'd want to look at, and nailing the challenge won't prevent you from boring the audience. A good photo IMO provokes the viewer to say something more than just, "That's really nice" or "I like it," so I aim for something that will inspire a lot of comments.

I think up most of my best ideas in the shower because it's relaxing and there are zero distractions. If I have a concept that doesn't fit, I'll write it down for later rather than waste it on an off-topic challenge. I keep my list of ideas online where I can get to it from anywhere and keep it updated. If I think a concept is particularly special, I might work it for months to get all the details ironed out or wait for an appropriate challenge.

If the challenge doesn't lend itself to conceptual stuff, I might just find a suitable location or subject and take a bazillion shots without any real plan until I get one that I think is special. The goal doesn't change though: interest and originality.

I usually take a buch of shots, have not real inspiring ideas, and then the last days of the challenge (sometimes the last few hours) I get an idea and have to ruch to shoot it. It also happens that my weekend is sun-tue, so this is the only time I have to play around with pictures really.

I think more than half my shots are bolt out of the blue. But I guess they are bolts while brainstorming...

That's what I do when I lay down to sleep at night instead of watching the TV. Some nights, I can spend an hour just laying there peacefully lost in thought and imagination...it's one of my favorite things to do.

I tend to purposely think about challenges as I'm trying to get to sleep. I have terrible insomnia and find that by focusing on one thing that I think is interesting, it helps me fall asleep faster and clears out all the other "junk" in my mind from the day. I actually DO keep paper and pencil next to my bed for ideas.

Sometimes I brainstorm with family members, and that is actually how I ended up with my highest rated shot! (story in my notes for that shot.)

Like Scalvert, I'll usually initially come up with a few ideas that are plausable, but perhaps a bit boring. From there I take off on other aspects or ideas. Sometimes, though I come back to the very first idea that seemed "too easy" and just try to execute the photo as well as I can. That's kind of what happened with the "Personification" challenge. It was my first idea, but it stuck with me so I decided to try it out. I really liked the results.
