Are you a politician? They usually sit ON the fence. You are very talented to be able to actually sit on BOTH SIDES of the fence.

(I like your "flip the bird" shot. I think you should make an entire set of emoticons. :-D)

Hey, cool! I've been trying to change careers!

(Right now that's the only emotion I have)

I, for one, would like to hear more from John, and possibly from the selected jurors, about what would have been in store for us if the experiment had gone ahead as planned. Most of us don't know diddly about juried competitions. John's last post helps some but I'd like to know more from people who have experience with them. And I'd like to know what is the thesis of the experiment? What does it propose to prove or disprove? Are there plans to use it as a basis for incorporating some sort of juried, or judged, competition into the dpc regimen on a regular basis? Would the purposes of the experiment be better served if it was done off-site, perhaps at the Fanatics site?

Harv,

I'll save you the trouble of "hearing from the jurors" regarding this particular competition: Setzler contacted us and asked if we'd be willing to participate, pending details to come. The details never came, as the experiment was aborted. All we "jurors" know about the format is what John has said here.

That said, I have both participated in and been a juror on real-world juried photographic competitions. Can you be more specific on what you'd liek to know? I'd be happy to share my own, personal experiences.

I for one like this idea and am pushing to see if we can sanction it officially. The idea would be to run a future challenge with an Extra Rules flag stating that any entries to the challenge would also be part of this experiment.

This would be an extra challenge and not replace a regular weekly challenge.

I can't promise anything but I'll keep you posted as the discussion progresses.

If you do, I would like to be involved in the setup of the challenge.

Thinking about it from the viewpoint of an average dpc photog, how is it different from the challenges we are used to? Does every entry get a critique?

I change it myself. My car doesn't like strangers touching her under there.

Critique is not always (and not usually) part of a juried competition... or at least most that I have entered do not get critiques. The only juried competition I have ever entered that got critique was the year end competition at my camera club.

I'd like to support this idea, maybe on a monthly or quarterly basis. Maybe with different jurors each time so as not to over burden anybody. They could be selected by council, based on their contributions to the site in one form or another. You know...sort of honarary!

Thanks John. Somehow I had the idea that the jurors did a critique on some or all of the entries. My bad.

Oh great, now I regret editing out all the abuse I originally put in that post. :-P

Great suggestion [/quote]

Didn't I say that, and have myself flamed for it? Wait, no, I suggested a poll to select the judges in the future. Not sure how well that would work, but it's still my suggestion.

Again, I am fine and dandy with the current judges, I was just suggesting this to help make everyone who had doubts to feel more included in the process.

edit - oh yeah, I suggested a poll, with SC making the short list for the poll.

Just saw this, Harvey. The answer is, not usually, or even often. In real-world juried exhibitions, the winners and honorable mentions will often be published in a flier or catalogue, and these may include jurors' comments on those particular images, but a lot of the time they don't.
