Most people can't drive...

Speed limit is 35mph here, (white truck driving by is the 4-lane street)
yet we can always hear cars flying by, often screeching brakes follow.
This seems to have little effect:
Sad. Wonder how many will have to die at that intersection before something is done. |

Answer: speed cameras
Though someone will say it's a violation of some right and fight it in court.

I drive about two miles to work, and it seems like I see an average of 3 people run a red light in that span more days than not.
I want to mount a camera on the car which I can trigger from the steering wheel and start taking pictures of them. |

Cameras won't do a darn thing because no points get taken off from your license since the cameras can not prove that you were driving the car at the time of the infraction.

I know East Grand in Escondido well. Always has had a reputation as a "raceway", going back decades and decades, if I recall correctly.

Getting hit in the pocket book works far better than just a few points.

Disagree. Points go on your driving record and stay there for at least three years. When your insurance company gets wind of it you then become an increased liability and they raise your premium a lot. Out here in the northeast you get fined $50 for running a red light when a camera catches you, and then it's all forgotten about. Some even get off paying the fine if they have a good alibi. I don't think these cameras are so good in stopping the offensive drving as they are in raising revenues for the municipality. |

$271 minimum here and it is a 3-point moving violation.
With the newer cars out now and their phenomenal rate of acceleration, one can be pulling out into the street, look left, (see a vehicle a ways away) look right, start to move out as you look left again and the damned car is like right there! Motorcycles can do this too - difficult to judge the rate of acceleration anymore. |

We're talking speeding not running red lights though cameras for both do work as a deterent to a certain extent. True, points will eventually effect your insurance which is another hit to the pocketbook. I hope the fines for speeding in your area are more than the red light fine you quoted.

I was caught by one of those red light cameras a couple of years ago and my fine was $50 with no points off my license. (I tried beating the yellow and got caught.) Maybe since then the fines have come up, but my friend who is a cop told me they can't take points off cause they can't prove it was you driving.
I'd be very happy if the fines here were what they are where Brad lives with points off. I'm a bicycle commuter now and am very aware of what's going down on the roads and how people are driving. Very scary to say the least. Drivers in the northeast don't take this activity too seriously and drive wrecklessly and don't pay too much attention to the task at hand. Many are oblivious to what's going on around them, and drive while eating, talking on the cell phone, reading, looking at maps, talking to the kids in the back seat, driving with one foot hanging out the window...all while their vehicle is moving. Not to mention speeding!
I got hit by a car last winter and would have had my elbow shattered had the side view mirror not been made to collapse. I can't tell you how many other close calls I've had because people drive irresponsibly and/or wrecklessly. There are very aggressive here and tailgate you at high speeds, cut you off intentionally if you're traveling too slow for them, etc. |

Reminds me of the Mr. Bean skit where he's late for the Dentist and gets dressed, has breakfast and brushes his teeth all while driving (from the back seat). He uses the windshield washer to rinse.

If you want to get something done about it, publish a chronicle of what happens -- single incidents involving different people are easily forgotten. Make sure it is seen as you see it -- a regular event.

if they stopped taking care of the roads, like here in vermont - people will slow down and pay attention to the road - if for no other reason than avoiding the pot holes... ;}

| Hmmm, I think they have dangerous intersections pretty much everywhere. The higher the speed the worse it is, here one from last spring in front of the shop. Bad crash |
