got my new 70-200l 2.8 and my 580ex today. the 580 is broken. I just got off the phone with customer support at canon. They are very helpful.
I did shoot a football game tonight with the flash..but it wont come out of zoom mode. Anyone else ever see this. Also the head sounds sick when you start it up. Like gears grinding. I hope buydig will get me a new one before the next playoff game.(high school)

hi barry,

i've got the exact same set-up as you and haven't had this 'zoom' problem. i take you mean that it is stuck at 105mm zoom even when you've got the lens pulled back to 70mm?

as far as the gear grinding goes, when i turn mine on, the motor does indeed retract the flash head internally, and it makes a bit of noise, but nothing like 'grinding'. maybe the flash is off the tracks or something.

sorry to hear it's causing you problems...

I bought another one and it is working fine. The first one I am sending back to buydig. Thanks for the reply. Just a little frustrating when you spend good money to overnight something....and it is broken.
New one works great.

Yeah that bums....

BTW...be mindful of your 20D & 70-200mm IS. A lot of us have had problems with Error 99, Error 01, Error 00. If you get these, you'll need to send the lens back to Canon for repair of the IS mechanism.

I didnt get the is version.........but I have had the err 99 several times with my 35-350. Just going along shooting and it locked up. I wasnt changing lenses or anything. Just shooting a senior picture when it locked up. Had to pull batteries to make it work again. At the time I thought it might have been something to do with my battery grip. I talked to canon and they told me the grip for the 20d drains the batteries 1 at a time instead of back and forth. I thought something was wrong with either the battery or the grip. It will also show the battery level as going down until you have the first one depleted. Then it will switch to the other and show full again.

Thanks
