Hmmmmm - not actually related to hard drive crashes, but-----for offloading all of my photos to CD, what I have is Nero Burning software, and I use the InCD component to format my CD-RWs so that I can move my (edited and original) photo files directly from my hard drive to the CD-RWs. The CD-RWs then act just like floppy disks. I can open, edit, and resave a file on the CD-RWs. The only thing is, I don't know if I can actually read those CD-RWs on another PC. I might have to install the InCD software component on the other PC first. Puts me at risk of not being able to read my CD-RWs in the future if I get rid of this PC.

With 20gig of data and more to come I'd think of installing a dvd burner.

What exactly is proper storage?? Are you talking about fireproof and such or something like humidity

Avoid to humid / to dry places.
Avoid to hot / cold places.
Avoid direct sunlight.
They won't survive a fire.
They should not be scratched on the label side.

Details and more info via Google.

I thought about the dvd burner, but did you calculate how long it takes to burn at the current speed ? I think it's around 7 hours or something (somebody to do the math ?)

The speed ratings for DVD burners are different then those of CD's. 2-speed doesn't mean that it fills 650mb in a half hour.
The Pioneer A05 (4x writer) fills a 4.7Gb DVD-R in 15 minutes for example.

4x is fast at the moment.
The story is that Mitsubishi will launch new lasers this year.
An 8x writer is supposed to come in April (mass production.
A 16x writer is supposed to come in June and go into mass production at the end of 2003, available in 2004.

you can't trust a review on a new product...

The moral of the story is to always use offsite storage...

I agree completely ... I didn't mean not to store offsite. Just wanted to point out that the specific drive makes a difference too. Like reading Consumer Reports and Lemon Aid before buying a car, try to buy a known hard drive. (I never buy a car model until it's been available for 4 years or so. I like others to iron out the bugs

Just one more point that I didn't see here... Backups are not backups until they have been verified... Do not trust that your offsite backups are worth spit unless you have recovered from them and tested the results. That means load them on a hard drive and skip through them with a slide show...

That's right.
4x DVD-R is like 36x CD-R to compare data write speed.
4x DVD-R will burn a DVD in 15 minutes.
