Some of you know I'm trying my hands at Egrets & Herron's for starters. I'm looking at purchasing the Canon 400MM F2.8L IS to throw onto my MkII.
I spoke with Canon this a.m. about using my 1.4TX with it, since I already know 400mm is nowhere near long enough for me. They told me no worries, that the 1.4 would work nicely with it. I know I'll loose 1 stop, but I'm not worried about that. I really just want to take some nice sharp images of these guys. In February, I'll be trying my hands at shooting [with camera] bald eagles as well.
Anyone have this particular lens? Do you use TX's on it? Do you like it? What don't you like about it, if you do own it?
Regards,

All I can say is a friend of mine has it, doesnt' use teleconverters, and dances a little jig every night before going to bed because he owns the lens.
I've seen his shots from it ( mostly birds ) and it's mind boggling. I'm sure you can take jig-dancing lessons somewhere or maybe just create your own steps. |

The last thing anyone want's to see is me dancing .... Kinda like the Sienfeld episode with what's her name dancing... LOL
I just know by experience, that the 400 by itself won't be long enough. I'm thiking of getting the 2x TC if I get the lens, especially if the TX won't effect the performance of the 400mm, which according to a tech this morning, wont.

Any 2x teleconverter will affect performance. The 1.4x does as well, but its usually very slight. So slight, in fact, that you may not see much of a difference. But you will notice some degradation in performance with a 2x. The question is, would anyone that was not familiar with the lens see a problem with the images... probably not.

I totaly agree, that once you start adding things to a lens, filters, TX's, you affect performance and/or quality. I even take off my UV filter once I get setup for shooting, then place it back on for lens protection while walking around, in addition to the lens cap itself.
paranoid...
RScorp. Does he have a site where one can see some of those images...?
Just curious.
