Two of my favorite cliched subjects. You're lucky the kid and the majority of the flower pics are on my home computer. ;-)

I actually started this thread to make fun of the idea of cliched shots..I always hear people say "No flowers, pets or kids for so help me!"
So I made a thread to post kid, flower and pet shots :-)
Me? I think people need to drink a beer or two and just chill out..its just photography..not like we rigged an election..OoOops!! |

Hokie... I hope you've never taken anything I've said about babies, cats, dogs, flowers and pretty girls seriously! It seems like this whole argument started when I joked that the "Something New" challenge was going to be full of babies, kittens, puppies and flower buds. Did you take it seriously?
I love this site, and so do a bunch of my online friends, and we always joke about the above subjects. Every challenge we try to imagine a photo that fits the challenge that involves a baby and at least one other thing, preferably more. Eg. for "On The Road" it was a pretty girl holding a baby, lying on the road with tyre tracks painted on them, and flowers scattered all around, perhaps with a dog licking her hand. Puppet10 thought up a late entry for "Corporate World" that had a baby in a teeny business suit suckling at a pretty girl's breast. It's fun! Try it :) |

?....
I have never really disagreed with the premise of the statement about "cliches" being the core of many photographers bag of skills. I think they are.
Heck, artistic cliches are taught in the finest institutions of higher learning. Most of what is taught(art, business or whatever) is about historically proven methods. Why would photography be any different.
The only 3 things I ever try to say about cliches when the topic comes up is.
1) Yes they exist
2) Cliches are valuable learning tools
3) Sometimes Cliches are so powerful an influence they can squeeze out more subtle types of expression. Especially if they are overused or too obvious.
But I think people should talk about all types of photographic subject matter and technique. Sometimes I feel we are a little sensitive in the discussions here about the word cliche. In college we never avoided topics and I am not sure why this one is so sensitive.
And I don't think folks talking about stuff is an argument at all. I think we should talk more about stuff like this :-)

I think that 'cliche' should be my next ribbon project on DPC. As I look at the favorite 8 photos on the favs page, two of them are kids :) These are both beautifully executed photos...
Maybe if I strive hard enough, I can produce a flower, child, or pet photo that scores this well :)

or in the case of the more obscure cliche ... how many DOES NOT MEET CHALLENGE comments could i get for a photo of:
(1) an elevator "down" indicator light, titled "I want to go up" (2) six armed men shooting at 'the good guy', titled "You Missed" (3) a laptop computer, titled "Alien Spacecraft Direct-Interface" (4) a TV, titled "The FCC is Monitoring Your Every Move" |

Well, I don''t know...but I shot a whole bunch of Flower, Bugs and Kitten Pictures and whatever they are they are still sorta nice to look at :-)
Well, seeing as bugs and flowers outnumber humans by several million to 1, its the endless pictures of Homo sapiens I find to be a tired old cliche. Except for the naked ones, of course.
