I know I asked for it but what is a good critique? is it supposed to be objective? Or based on personal preference?

To me a good critique is one that tells me anything about my photo. What kind of reaction did it get out of you? Are the technical aspects ok? And simply do you like it or not? Any or all of that info is ok to me. Pretty much, any comment is a good comment to me. Even if it does just say "your shot really stinks". At least I know that it didn't have an overall appeal to someone. I put all the comments together to make one final general assumption about my shot.

Thanks Heather, I sometimes forget you gotta take the good with the bad. |

With my critiques (for the critique club) I use a standard of
(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) -
(2) BACKGROUND -
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL -
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL -
(5) MY OPINION ON THE PHOTO ΓΆ€“
By definition, these are my views of a photo. They are objective only from the perspective that I really don't know any of the photographers here, thus no personal bias is included. But personal opinions are just that - personal. On the other hand, I don't feel like I am outside the mainstream.

My critiques follow a similar format and I "try" to be somewhat objective in telling what I see in the photograph. I also tell what I like about it, what might improve it, and my overall opinion. I try to be encouraging in whatever I say.
If I've done all that I believe I've given a good critique.

I like one that tells me something I didn't know about my picture. One that picks up on something I didn't see or gives me another perspective on it. One that goes beyond the obvious and seems to have stopped and thought about the picture.
I realise this is about as useful as saying that I want a 'surprise' for a present, but it is still what I look for in a critque that I find helpful or insightful.
