I think health insurance is a crime...how can Magic Johnson have HIV for near 20 years and be 100% fine just because he has the money to spend on treatment, meanwhile, every other person who got it is dead in that amount of time. I think it's ridiculous...just curious what anyone else thinks.

My friend is a doctor, and he said that more often than not, there are more tests the doctors want to do to properly diagnose a condition, but the health insurance companies give the doctors a set amount of money they are allowed to spend...and sometimes they just don't do enough for the patient...it's fact.

Well, there is no silver bullet option. You could ration healthcare, but how likely is the american public going to swallow the answer, "we could help you, but it costs a lot and frankly isn't worth it." We could socialize health care, but how likely is the american public going to swallow, "the specialist will see you in 5 months."

We are totally spoiled in this country. We think that we deserved the absolute cutting edge of medicine at little or no cost. We also think that if a treatment exists that money is no option in the name of health. Eventually this mentality will catch up and we will pay the big price. You are only catching the first rumblings now, but this is chop compared to the tsunami on the way...

Yep - it's just like Doc says. I'll just add that it is my opinion that a huge portion of insurance payouts actually go to lawyers anyway.

...and thanks, Doc, for brightening up everyone's day. ;-)

I understand how health care (as an industry and as a public service) is in crisis right now, and I understand how insurance works. I just wish that every year, when my premiums go up, it would be just a little less than the "raise" I get so that I'd at least have the illusion of getting ahead a bit. ;)

I must say that it's not really the health insurance or medical costs that chap my hide...it's the prescription coverage. Aaaaaack! :)
