Since this is a goal of mine, and since I have a hefty hill to climb, I was wondering which photographers out there have been able to maintain a 6.0+ average. It's hard to find them except for poking around.

Here are a few I've found:
Scalvert
DrJOnes
Nico_Blue (ok, well, it's 5.9980)
Heida
Librodo
e301

I'm sure there are more. Can you help me flush them out so I can look and learn from the masters?

There are many with high averages who have only entered one or a few challenges. It's much harder to maintain a high average over many entries.

Thanks you guys, that was really helpful.

DrAchoo,
Your not doing bad yourself. You would have a 6.019 average if you would of not entered the "light on white II" and the "Dairy" Challenge. Those two challenges keeps you from having an average above 6.000 at this time. If you want to pull your average up to 6.000 with the next challenge you will need a score of 7.470 and at least 300 votes. You can do it!

And if you do it I believe you would accomplish your current goals in your profile.

Ha, ya, light on white killed me. ;) Lesson learned about last minute entries involving rock salt. Oh well, I don't want to be scared to enter because of "the average". :) I got a few 6+ in the pipe so I'll gain about 0.02 this week. It's a long climb though and then you gotta keep it. Aye, there's the rub.

You've only entered 17 challenges and you're a borderline 6 now. I had a 5.74 average after 17 challenges.

179 challenges entered with a 6.02, I'm just barely clinging on.

I hope voting averages are not the way people measure their success.

I think once a photographer gets experienced you will know if your photo is good regardless of the score.

I have had photos score high that were more "flash" than substance and scored well...

...and I have photos that I know are a heck of a lot better regardless of the score....

Was so very close around the 90 challenge mark.
The last 20 challenges wiped that out!

i'm at 5.04 average, mind you it doesnt seem to have moved in the last long while.

i have a tendency to score a 6 then drop to barely a 4 in the next challenge. i'm waiting for my next 'hot streak'.

Don`t take it to heart Brad, it`s not an indicator of talent so much as the popularity of your challenge submissions and as we all know it`s easy to hit a bad patch with our choice of submission.

There are a great deal of very talented photographers on this site who are below six..Imagineer, Zeuszen, JodieCoston, Sher9204 to name but a very few from my favourites list.

Jon Lucas (Imagineer) has been selected as a favourite photographer by over 300 people and his pics have been chosen over 1300 times yet he languishes below ME in the average score stakes...which makes it a very unreliable indicator of talent in my book.

That`s why I don`t get too hung up on where my average sits...I`d much rather have people choose my pics as favourites.I tend to concentrate more on filling my portfolio than entering challenges these days.

Actually, I would rather be happy with my work and have a 4.0 average
than to be only trying to please others only and sit at a 6.0+ average.
Funny how that works.

By no means do I think there is a magic line where below 6.0 "you suck".

This is all trends. If I were to pick a handful of people from the, what, tens of thousands of registered users on this site, I would have better success in picking excellence if the user has a high average. It doesn't mean those are the only good photographers, but they are easier to find.

As mentioned in another thread, I'm relatively early in my photography career and it probably is best to learn "what works" before I break it and go my own way with "what works for me".

Actually, I will have to disagree with DrAchoo and the idea that scoring higher means that your photography is working

One thing that I would like to say: the idea of looking at your scores, entering challenges, being risky, not being risky, etc, etc are all good and fun reasons to take pictures.

It seems sometimes if someone like me posts "Ohhh..scores don't matter..blah..blah..blah" that I think less of scoring or keeping tally of stats, etc.

I don't.

What I hope people get is that it's fun to have public scoring, stats and sharing of weird set-up shots and other stuff IN ADDITION to all the other stuff..thats what makes it fun here...it's like a big ole buffet of photo stuff :-D

Well, remember I meant "what works" to mean "what works in general". With that idea, a high score is almost "what works" by definition. I certainly also believe in "what works for me" and that doesn't correlate nearly as well with a high score.
