That is the question.

I've used SLRs in the past, got some nice results but never much liked taking them anywhere. Now my little Olympus is whole other matter, it's small, it goes everywhere with me, I can take pictures in the street without having to look like a papperazzi and fussing around with lenses.

So I'm not really sold on the idea of dSLR but I am seeing a whole lot of them coming down in price.
Now here's my rub, should I go for a dSLR and maybe not like it or is there a compact camera out there which is a bit better than my Olympus but at a reasonable price?

Please help.

It really depends on what you're after. If your current camera meets your needs, why change? SLRs will only get cheaper and better.

If however you want the flexibility of a good lens system then an SLR is a good way to go, and you can always bring your small camera along with you everywhere you go, and only bring the "big boy" when you know you'll be shooting.

I am with you on this. I love my olympus p&s because I can do manual settings, I however hate it for the manual focus...man it's annoying having to hold that button down. And while I would love to upgrade to a DSLR (the E-500 to be exact) I cannot justify it. I love having my camera with me everywhere and while that is still an option but with more stuff, I would most likly leave it at home when I'm just milling around not expecting a shot and would take it with me when I know what I'm going out for.

I say if you're unsure then stay with your 760, it is a good camera with a great zoom and gives you manual control too. You could also upgrade to the new olympus SP500UZ. If you really really decide you want to buy one but still not sold on it, buy one for me and I'll let you know how it does ;).

Why not have both? Carry the Oly with you all the time, use the dSLR when you need to get serious and portability/recognition is not an issue.

Hi all,

I just joined and am awaiting my Canon 5D. I currently use my EOS-3 for B&W prints that I do myself. I have a Canon G3 which is great but as with the first response to this post, I cannot wait to slap my Canon L lenses on the 5D. In my opinion, compact digitals just cannot compare with the output and range of DSLRs.

Well, I'm much to new to the digital world to say much more so that will be it for now!
