I don't think anyone has said, at least not me, that they will systematically vote low on a bordered picture. If the border is done well, then it will possibly add to the score. But if it is done poorly, then it will take away.
You might think your polyester plaid jacket that has been in the family for generations will help you get the job, but the interviewer might not think the same. He'll probably choose the naked girl instead.LOL
Anywho, that's just my 2 cents on borders.

I think that we judge on what you submit. Everything in the picture is a choice. the bordure is a choice. it's part of what you submit. Personnally if I do not like the border, I will probably do like a -1.

Personally, I think that to mark down an otherwise excellent photograph because the author made a foolish choice in borders is ridiculous. Anyone would think that the border cannot be removed and has therefore permanently damaged the image.
I believe it to be far better to judge the image alone, and then to advise the photographer about the bad choice of border. Only then can this site remain one about photography and not graphic art.
As usual, your mileage may vary and I respect everyone's right to disagree. |

I think my frame was obnoxious enough to get the people to click on it to rate badly but then after looking at the photo they thought it was good? LOL |

Psychephylax,
I thought your picture was awesome, adn I thought your border really detracted from it. I believe I left a comment saying as such. It was just so, "much" if that makes any sense. For the record, I didn't score you any lower for it, but I felt it would have been more pleasing to look at with a smaller border.
You may be right. People thought, "dang, what a border!" then looked closer and said, "dang, what an awesome shot!"
For what it is worth, I don't think your placement suffered any because of it!!! :-) Congrats

Actually, I think it was a rather good border, psych. Brought out the black and white contrasts in the photo. |

Psychephylax,
I also didn't mind the large border, and can think of two valid reasons for using one as you did.
It may allow you to crop without resampling (preserving image integrity), and yet display an image that folks won't complain is "too small." It will probably also allow you to save with a higher-quality JPEG setting: since the border will compress efficiently, you preserve kb for reproducing the details and avoiding artifacts in the image.
One of my images recently was 151kb with a JPEG setting of 9, but only about 85kb with a setting of 8. By keeping the same overall dimensions but using a 2 or 3 pixel border I was able to use the setting of 9 while getting the file size down to 148kb. |

I would prefer if we didn't have borders at all. But it's not that big of a deal. I understand why we are allowing it. You don't place a border on an image to not be noticed. Once a border is on a photo it becomes part of the whole presentation. If I don't like the border I will factor that in to my score.

i can see how a border like that might not go over well with some people. they maybe thinking, was the shot just scaled down on the computer to accommodate size and/or the border? or is the border hiding something/covering part of the image we would otherwise see? framing is a critical decision in any visual medium.
sizing has something to do with it too. as an example, 8mm film projected on a theatre screen does not come close to carrying the visual impact 35mm does when projected on the whole screen. you're aware of the empty space around the image when viewing 8mm. so the border in your photo might come off as empty space or a "filler". personally when i view photos, the contrast between the site's bg and the photo (if there is any) doesn't catch my attention at all. i'm looking at the photo within the "submitted frame"(the submitted frame being 160px-640px). when i see something other than the photo inside the "submitted frame", it draws more attention than if there wasn't one.
that being said your shot was very nice, but i can't help thinking a border like that took away from the perspective effect of the photo.

Actually, that partucular border I use for all my photos (click the prints button) and when it is printed on an 8x10 or a 4x6 the border is MUCH MUCH smaller. Perhaps quarter of an inch on an 8x10 and one sixteenth on a 4x6. I like the way it looks but apparently many do not, so I will not use it anymore :) Plus, I don't want going "Oh, look it's another Psyche border"
And, the photo would have been a standard 640x480 if they let the border be going around that instead of being counted as the part of the 640 bit.

I checked all of your comments and only noticed one person that actually mentioned that your score would have been higher should you have not used a border. You stated that it is a photo contest and that the border should not be judged, but once you add a border and submit it to the contest that is just like touching up the photo. Some people touch up their photos and some don't and I am sure that people get judged on the touchups which occur.
Originally posted by psychephylax: I use a standard border for all of my photos becaues I know how well it looks when it prints...It's not that glamourous when it's on display but I got like 3 comments about my border already and some even rated the PHOTO on the merit of the border...Like what the heck...A border is just that...a border...I thought this was Digital PHOTO Challenge not Digital photo BORDER challenge... |
