My shutter speed was set at 1/4000 and ISO at 400 to get some extra light for the speed. I wish I had a faster speed to select.

1/10 of a second. I tried severl and this one exposure was the best, umm, compromise shall we say?

dsmeth- what on earth do you need that much shutter speed for? Use a strobe!

Has anyone built a mechanical strobe? This was my little gadget that failed miserably tonight :(

make you own light or sound trigger for any strobe. I have encountered folks that have built such things, from this site's plans, to capture arrows in apples, bullets in eggs and wine glasses, etc.
an example

Totally dark room, let loose the item (rock on string, gun, etc) and the sound will trigger the strobe. the camera is left with teh shutter open, since the flash is the only light, you get stopped action of up to 1/30,000 sec.

I wouldn't worry about it. From the thumbnails, I didn't see a shot which would require a faster speed. I didn't see many which needed more than about 1/1000th.

I probably don't but I had enough light without raising ISO to high to make it work so I did. The result wasn't much different at 1/4000 than it was at 1/1000.
Also I don't own a strobe.

Holy moly :) I think I need a PhD for that circuit board design! That seems a bit more complicated than the one I built. Mine was built for under $20 using parts from Radio Shack.
