...or where have I seen this before.

I have heard more then a few people (blockheads) on this site and elsewhere dismiss the works of our predecessors in film, the pioneers of photography such as Adams, Stieglits and Steichen, as irrelevant to what we do now in digital. And yet, time and time again I see their works echoed on the very pages of this website, perhaps without the creator even knowing.

A few examples ΓΆ€“

Ennil's "Sex Sells"

Edward Weston's "Civilian Defense" 1942

I don't see too much 'dismissal' of classic photography in today's world. What I see most often is disregard of the traditional rules and philosophies of classical photography in the name of 'art'. The aspiring 'artist' is in such a hurry to make his/her statement to the world that they are willing to go overboard into some outlandish niche to gain recognition. I see a lot of this specifically on DeviantArt. There is one photographer over there who is by far the most popular on the site. This person's work have very little photographic merit in the realm of technique. It depends on shock factor. It's pop culture... maybe like Britney Spears compared to Johann Sebastian Bach... Will Britney Spears still be selling albums in 10 years? 15? 20? Bach's music is still wildly popular after 300 years.
