It's a rough concept the Art Director had. They decided it had too much red for a cover photo. I kind of liked it. It still has a lot of work left to do to it, but I didn't think it was "too red".
What do you think? How would you improve this shot?

I suspect the art director's point is that typically red covers don't sell magazines. It's not an "uplifting" color. Especially not as muddy and brownish an overall hue as this one has. It just looks kind of "dirty", you know?

I don't think it's too much red as much as the wrong shade of red. That shade just does not work with the color of the Gingerbread men. It's bleeding all over and everything seems over soft.

agreed. The very soft outer portions of the gingerbread people mixed with the sharp inner body (e.g. the "stomachs" of the gingerbread people don't match) also, color is not appealing |

Unfortunately the red has been darkened down so it would reproduce in CMYK. We are trying it with a green plate tomorrow. I think they are bringing better cookies as well.
This magazine is very unique in the fact that it doesn't sell at the news stand. It's mailed directly to rural electrical COOP members.

The principle still obtains, though. The new colors sound a lot better to me :-)

What about the shape of the plate? They thought it shouldn't be square...

I think the shape of the plate is fine...it just looks too empty, especially in the top right corner. Perhaps more "fluff" on the corner or something...like draping the ribbon or what-have-you across it, or putting the cookies higher on the plate and shooting at a lower angle up towards them so there's less empty space? Dunno... I suck at arranging cutesy things. I like the concept of the pic though and I even like the colors. :)

I have to leave space for text on the sides. :(

Too much red? No. Not enough cookies.
Square plate? Looks like a napkin at first glance. Round is what "grandma" always used. How about a round, cut-glass plate with a festive red napkin under the cookies? |

Hmmm... Ok, this is just how I would rearrange it -
The cookies look lonley, they need to be on a smaller plate.
THey should both have the multicolored gumdrops, it adds color against the overwhelming red (its not to much, but it needs to be balanced with something of another hue) - UNLESS you make them drastically different from eachother - like girl/boy or less uniform frosting.
There is the barest hint of greens in the "holidayish" background fluff - either bring it out more (and keep the gumdrops a lime/light color) or axe it completely out of the background. :)
And I agree with bear_music- the colors seem muddy. The holiday decor seems to ask for a bright cheery red.If you cant use the bright red - maybe take out the holiday theme and use "grammas linnens" in a nice beige with the red plate and some old fashioned oven mitts on a wood table or something with a "country brown" kind of feel. :)

Note that if you print with typical CMYK offset processes, the reds with fade and shift color with exposure to light (especially UV) faster than other colors. Leave that cover in the sun for a Summer and it will probably be a gold color. Next time your out hiking, keep an eye out for an old CocaCola can or Marlboro box .... |

They don't print it on a very high quality stock either...
