Very nice shots John. Tonights the closest approach I think and it is going to rain. The last couple nights have been cloudy and am hoping for a clear one next week. I'll probably try some drawings at the eyepiece. Have to pull out the LX200 8 inch Meade. |

Funny, the rough outlines -- especially of the left photo -- closely resemble a satellite photo of the Horn of Africa/Arabian Peninsula area.
Next time, can you get a close-up shot of one of the rovers?

The bright perimeter of the left image is due to the stacking/compositing process. Many of the individual images had blurred edges due to atmospheric blurring, and in the stacking process, it tends to lighten artificially. It's very difficult to post-process that out so I left it and focused instead on processing for the surface features.
Regarding the rovers, if you look veeeery closely at the bottom right hand side of the right image, and screw your eyes up just right....

The 12" LX200 is a shade over 3000mm focal length. I'm using a 14mm eyepiece (214X for visual), plus I've got a focal extender on the eyepiece, and then using significant optical zoom on the 4500. What that comes out to in terms of actual focal length is too complex for me to fathom. |
